Cataclysm Classic Dig Sites
Archaeology dig sites are marked on your map with a shovel icon. Each continent boasts four sites. These sites are persistent; their locations don’t change. Your Archaeology skill level dictates the zones where you can excavate fragments.
Exploring these sites, you uncover fragments and keystones, each with unique importance. Sites replenish after you gather three fragments, relocating elsewhere on the same continent.
Fragments
Fragments are the building blocks of Archaeology. They come in various types, each associated with a specific civilization or race and found in particular zones. Excavating requires the appropriate Archaeology level.
As your skill grows, you uncover rarer and more valuable fragments.
Surveying
The Survey tool, found in your professions tab, assists in locating fragments. It’s active while within a dig site, providing directional guidance using different colored indicators (red for distant fragments, green for close). While helpful, use survey as a supplement, not a substitute for exploration.
- Red: 80 yards or more
- Yellow: 40-80 yards
- Green: Under 40 yards
Once discovered, fragments appear as yellow dots, easily identified by their golden gleam. Failure to collect them immediately might result in loss.
Keystones
Keystones significantly accelerate artifact creation. One keystone is equivalent to 12 fragments of the same type. Keystones are item-specific to artifacts, typically 1 to 3 per artifact, requiring careful strategy. Keystones can be traded on the Auction House.
Fragments remain essential for artifact completion, even with keystones.
