Witcher Cookbook Authors Interview: Lore, Geralt, and More

The Witcher Cookbook Authors Discuss Lore-Based Recipes, Growing Up with Geralt, and More

Video game cookbooks have emerged as a unique phenomenon in recent years, blending the worlds of gaming and everyday cooking. From the post-apocalyptic wastelands of Fallout to the flavors of intergalactic travel in Destiny, there’s a cookbook for every gamer’s culinary desires. Now, we have a cookbook from the world of The Witcher, offering a fascinating take on the game-to-cooking crossover and a unique charm to recipes straight out of Kaer Morhen and beyond.

The authors of the book, Anita Sarna and Karolina Krupecka, have generously shared insights into their process of creating over 80 unique and engaging recipes ripped straight from the world of The Witcher, perfectly blending fantasy and real-world cuisines. The Witcher Official Cookbook: Provisions, Fare, and Culinary Tales from Travels Across the Continent is now available to buy for $34.99 MSRP.

Faithful to the World, But with New Stories

iGV: Were there any specific guidelines or preferences from The Witcher team that influenced your work on the cookbook?

Anita Sarna and Karolina Krupecka: Our primary goal was to remain faithful to the world of The Witcher and its existing lore, while also creating something new and original. We were careful to ensure that our cookbook narrator and new stories seamlessly integrated with the existing world of The Witcher. We delved deep into the intricate details, often hidden from plain sight, that form the foundation of the Continent’s “reality.”

We decided to set the narrative of our cookbook sometime after the events of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, allowing readers to encounter familiar traces of stories from the games. We also incorporated a few sentimental mentions from the timeline of the “Blood of Elves” book, specifically referencing the witchers we were granted permission to include in the narrative.

Real-World Inspiration Meets Fantasy Cuisine

iGV: Did you draw inspiration from real-world cuisines to enhance the authenticity of the cookbook?

Anita Sarna and Karolina Krupecka: The majority of food in The Witcher universe is rooted in real-world culinary references. For instance, in Velen and White Orchard, we see strong influences from Polish and neighboring cuisines, Nordic elements in the Skellige Isles, and Italian and French motifs in Toussaint. While designing the recipes for this book, we blended multiple references and inspirations, creating our own interpretations that were carefully tailored to the world of The Witcher.

A Shared Passion for The Witcher

iGV: Do you have a personal connection to The Witcher series, either as fans or anything else?

Anita Sarna and Karolina Krupecka: Absolutely! Both of us have been acquainted with The Witcher since our late childhood. Our journey began with the books, which we practically grew up with. We then followed the Polish series, which aired back in 2002, and finally, we immersed ourselves in the games. The Witcher universe is widely known in Poland, having been a part of our national fantasy book canon for many years.

Heartfelt Recipes: Chicken Sandwich and Mahakam Zalewajka

iGV: Do you have a favorite recipe from the cookbook, and if so, what makes it special to you?

Anita Sarna and Karolina Krupecka: Every recipe in the book holds a special place in our hearts, but the Chicken Sandwich inspired by The Witcher 3 and the Mahakam Zalewajka recipe from the “Season of Storms” book are particularly dear to us. The former was the very first recipe we created that was inspired by the game, and it even gained quite a bit of online recognition. The latter allowed us the opportunity to meet and merge our passions for The Witcher world and food motifs.

Incorporating Cultural Depth: Folklore, Superstitions, and Motifs

iGV: The Witcher universe is rich with cultural references. How did you incorporate these elements into the cookbook beyond just the recipes themselves?

Anita Sarna and Karolina Krupecka: We incorporated cultural elements through various means, including intricate ornaments, stylized photographs with selected props, and captivating culinary stories. Karolina has a deep passion for folklore patterns, European fairy tales, and regional superstitions and beliefs, making this cookbook a perfect platform for her to weave these cultural elements into the book’s design and the stories we co-created with the CDPR loremaster.

The ornaments in the book draw inspiration from motifs found in European patterns, particularly those prevalent in Skellige. We also drew from Polish folklore motifs with Slavic accents, evident in White Orchard or Velen. We meticulously researched ethnographic books and visited numerous museums, gathering a library of symbols and patterns used in clothing, embroidery, furniture, architecture, and everyday items. We then translated this knowledge into the photographed scenes and props.

Collaboration with CD Projekt Red: A Passionate Partnership

iGV: Can you share any insights into the collaboration process with CD Projekt Red when developing the cookbook?

Anita Sarna and Karolina Krupecka: We worked very closely with the CD Projekt RED team throughout the process, collaborating with their art team, loremaster, localization, and marketing team. They were incredibly dedicated to this project, trusted our vision, and actively helped us shape and deliver it. It was a privilege to work alongside such passionate individuals! Our shared goal was to create a tribute to the Witcher world that went beyond lore-inspired recipes, emphasizing the world-building role of food and employing design elements, such as stylized photos, culinary stories, and illustrations, to craft an immersive Witcher experience.

A Dream Come True: Meeting Andrzej Sapkowski

iGV: And what about the author of The Witcher books, Andrzej Sapkowski?

Anita Sarna and Karolina Krupecka: We were fortunate to meet Mr. Sapkowski personally and engage in an inspiring conversation about food! While he wasn’t directly involved in the cookbook’s creation, he wrote an insightful foreword (spanning four pages!) after reviewing a sample of the book.

He elaborated on how he introduced culinary themes into his books, drawing from his own life experiences and memories. He also highlighted the significance of food in world-building, a philosophy that perfectly aligns with ours. It was a true honor and dream come true for long-time fans of The Witcher like us.

Challenges and Triumphs: From Wight Soup to Kaer Morhen

iGV: Were there any particular recipes that posed unique challenges in terms of translating them from fantasy to reality?

It was a challenge to connect all of the food motifs that are in the books and games and then create, on that basis, one coherent cookbook. On top of that we decided to incorporate storytelling into the cookbook — there is a short story for each recipe — which aims to shape a complete culinary journey from the perspective of the cookbook’s narrator.

The most challenging recipes were those connected with monsters — such as Wight or Troll’s soup from the games. We had to make them in a creative way so they would actually be edible in real life, but still somehow sit safely within the lore. We supported these ideas by explaining their background within the in-world narrative.

The Kaer Morhen chapter was also tricky for us — according to lore it’s not a place open to outsiders, so it would be strange for our narrator (who is a commoner, not a witcher) to be there and learn their cooking secrets (or potion recipes that are toxic for humans). So we came up with a particular idea to make some kind of “roundabout” reasoning for it — but we’ll let this be a surprise for readers!
