Pokémon Sleep: A Review (iGV)

Arriving at the Pokémon Sleep Event

The Pokémon Sleep media event was unlike anything I’d ever experienced. I drove to a fancy hotel in Santa Monica, a stone’s throw from the beach, and checked into a room filled with Pokémon-themed goodies. I felt like a kid again, surrounded by Pikachu toiletries, a Snorlax plushie, and a Kanto Gym Badge backpack. My excitement was palpable as I eagerly awaited the presentation of the game.

The event space was decorated with sleeping Pokémon, including a giant inflatable Snorlax costume. The atmosphere was electric, and everyone was buzzing with anticipation. The Pokémon PR team welcomed us with drinks and snacks, creating a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. I even accidentally spilled my drink on my shirt, but luckily no one noticed.

How to Play Pokémon Sleep

The Pokémon Sleep presentation revealed the game’s unique gameplay mechanics. The game uses a unique art style with a children’s storybook feel and aims to encourage players to track their sleep patterns. To play, you simply tap a button on the app to signal that you’re going to sleep, place your phone near your pillow, and let the app record your sleep data.

When you wake up, the app shows you how long you slept in each Sleep Style: Dozing, Snoozing, or Slumbering. Based on your Sleep Style and the amount of Drowsy Power you earn, different Pokémon appear, adding an element of surprise and incentivizing healthy sleep patterns. The game even records your sleep noises and allows you to listen back, so be warned if you’re a sleep talker!

Throughout the day, you can interact with your Pokémon, feed them Poké Biscuits, and help them grow. Each week, you’ll travel to a new island with different Pokémon and a new Snorlax with unique dietary needs. The game also offers a social aspect, allowing you to share sleep data with friends, but with options for privacy. The Pokémon GO Plus + adds extra features like Pikachu lullabies and a special Pikachu wearing a nightcap, making the experience even more immersive.

Playing Pokémon Sleep

I couldn’t wait to try out Pokémon Sleep for myself! I plugged in my phone, pressed the sleep button on the app, and closed my eyes. I woke up feeling surprisingly energized and excited to see what Pokémon had joined my Snorlax. I had gathered a Squirtle, a Pichu, and a Geodude, all with unique Sleep Styles.

Pokémon Sleep utilizes the familiar mechanics of collecting, leveling up, and building relationships with Pokémon. Feeding my Pokémon Poké Biscuits helped them grow and eventually join my team, allowing me to gather berries and cook dishes for Snorlax. The game cleverly incorporates the concept of sleep stages and their importance for memory, making it a fun and engaging way to learn about your sleep patterns.

I quickly discovered that Pokémon Sleep, like many other games, has a paid battle pass system – the Sleep Pass and Premium Sleep Pass. Diamonds can be earned through gameplay, but can also be purchased using real money, allowing players to progress faster. While the game offers a free-to-play experience, the paid options add extra benefits, like more Poké Biscuits and Diamonds, enhancing the overall gameplay experience.

Overall, Pokémon Sleep is a fun and engaging way to learn about your sleep patterns and improve your sleep habits. It’s a refreshing take on the classic Pokémon formula, leveraging the power of gamification to encourage healthy sleep practices. I can’t wait to continue exploring the game and see what other Pokémon I can encounter!
