Expeditions: A MudRunner Game Review

Truckin’ Problems

Expeditions, a spin-off from the MudRunner/SnowRunner series, maintains the core gameplay loop of navigating challenging off-road terrain. However, it introduces a unique twist, shifting the focus from hauling cargo to exploration and research. Instead of defined routes, Expeditions plunges players into vast wilderness landscapes – think rocky deserts, dense forests, and muddy rivers. Missions often involve tasks such as inspecting equipment, discovering remnants of old aircraft, or even tracking down fossils. The game’s visual appeal is strong, showcasing the varied beauty of Colorado, Arizona, and the European Carpathian Mountains. However, some mission objectives can be cryptic and frustratingly gated.

What We Said About SnowRunner

SnowRunner, the predecessor to Expeditions, received praise for its realistic, challenging, and time-consuming off-road experience. Players appreciated its authenticity and the deep satisfaction derived from successfully navigating demanding terrains. The review highlighted the game’s ability to create a unique blend of simulated trucking and off-road adventure. This aspect is acknowledged as one of its major strengths, unlike games that often rely on unnecessary elements or try to upsell extra items.

MudRunner or SnowRunner: Which one do you like most?

Feature MudRunner SnowRunner
Gameplay Focus Cargo transportation Cargo transportation with greater emphasis on exploring
Mission Design Specific objectives & defined routes Less structured missions
Terrain Muddy terrains Icy and snowy terrains
Overall Experience Simpler driving experience with defined objectives More challenging and expansive experience

Too Sunk to Truck

Expeditions offers a substantial experience, with dozens of missions that can range from straightforward to extremely time-consuming. The lengthy playtime is partially due to the trial-and-error nature of the game. Players might find themselves facing unique challenges on each mission, requiring adjustments to their vehicle or careful navigation. The emphasis on exploring areas to uncover hidden objectives sometimes leads to wasted fuel and time. The addition of a drone feature and various crew member perks offers additional tactical options. While Expeditions’ base-building mechanics seem expensive, the modifications are quite valuable to upgrade trucks and overcome various challenges. While some might find the lack of co-op disappointing initially, the developers have confirmed co-op functionality in future updates.

While Expeditions offers diverse and beautiful environments, some aspects of the game design still require refinement. Missions might become more approachable with more explicit cues on the map regarding unexplored areas. A more intuitive map system, with clearer visual indicators for objectives, would enhance the overall experience.

Despite some shortcomings, Expeditions provides a satisfyingly challenging driving experience. The exploration aspect and unique mission objectives create a compelling alternate approach compared to typical cargo hauling in the MudRunner/SnowRunner franchise. The game’s considerable playtime potential, coupled with its core gameplay strengths, suggests an overall successful spin-off.
