What Is Destiny 2: Into The Light?
Bungie’s next expansion for Destiny 2, The Final Shape, is scheduled to arrive in early June 2024. But before then, a new content update dubbed “Into The Light” is set to be released in April 2024. This update, as announced by Destiny 2 director Joe Blackburn, aims to bridge the gap for new players, easing them into the game’s story and gameplay while preparing them for the events of The Final Shape.
Vaulted Content and Narrative
Destiny 2’s vast lore and story have become increasingly difficult to follow for new players. Many expansions and seasonal content have been vaulted, making it hard for newcomers to understand the context behind current events. This includes pivotal characters like Mara Sov, Uldren Sov (now Crow), Riven, Caiatl, and Mithrax. The introduction of “New Light” aimed to provide a starting point, but the narrative transition from New Light to the current season’s story can still feel jarring.
Reprising Seasonal and Raid Weapons
The game’s crafting system introduced in The Witch Queen expansion allows players to craft weapons found in seasonal loot pools. However, these weapons become inaccessible once a season ends, leaving new players at a disadvantage. To address this, Into The Light will provide crafting patterns for these previously unavailable seasonal weapons. This will allow new players to catch up with veterans by crafting some of the best weapons in the game.
In addition to crafting patterns, Into The Light is expected to reintroduce some classic Destiny 1 weapons, including the Dreg’s Promise sidearm, Patience and Time sniper rifle, and potentially the Icebreaker solar sniper rifle. These weapons will likely have updated functionalities to fit the current sandbox, similar to the Dragon’s Breath exotic rocket launcher.
Preparation For The Final Shape
Into The Light serves as a bridge between current content and the upcoming The Final Shape expansion. It aims to prepare both seasoned players and newcomers for the game’s grand finale. The Final Shape will introduce a new enemy type called the Subjugators, who possess crowd-control abilities utilizing Stasis and Strand powers. It will also feature a new raid, considered the largest in Destiny 2 history, with six encounters.
The update will also introduce Raid Mastery, providing challenges that reward players with crafting patterns for missing reprised raid weaponry, such as the Black Hammer sniper rifle. This feature will allow players to complete raid-specific quests and expand their crafting options.
By bridging the gap between the past and the future of Destiny 2, Into The Light aims to make the game more accessible for new players while also offering veteran players a fresh way to experience classic weapons and content. As we approach the release of The Final Shape, Into The Light serves as a crucial step towards ensuring a unified experience for all players.
