Throughout the history of World of Warcraft, there have been many weapons that have had a very special place in the heart of the game’s community. The first weapon that became the subject of legends and myths was the Ashbringer. Although the weapon originally came from vanilla, there were still rumors and theories about how to get the improved version of this weapon until the “Wrath of the Lich King” expansion.
Now, that dream is finally coming true with Season 8 Stage of Discovery.
What was announced?
The “Season of Discoveries” is a heavily modified variant of WoW Classic. There are new mechanics, new secrets, and also new quests. In different phases, there are raids, new abilities for all classes, and other interesting innovations.
On April 8, 2025, the 8th phase will begin and with it we will go to the Plaguelands – to New Avaloren and the Scarlet (via worldofwarcraft.com). In the process, an “old” legendary weapon also seems to be important again: The Ashbringer.
Why is the Ashbringer legendary?
The Ashbringer originally came into the game in its corrupted variant with Naxxramas and could be obtained from vanilla WoW at the time. The special thing about this weapon was that it occasionally whispered small spells to its wearer. At the same time, the weapon allowed a special sequence to be triggered in the Scarlet Monastery.
The actually hostile followers of the crusade were suddenly allied and there were indications that a new quest line was to be created here to purify the Ashbringer again.
The community was already creative back then and a forum post from the early days of WoW in particular became legendary – in it, a player described the supposed “quest line” that would ultimately lead to the weapon being obtained.
In fact, this was completely fabricated and the quest line was never implemented in World of Warcraft.
Later, the Ashbringer was also available as an artifact weapon for paladins in “Legion” and even some allusions to the old rumors – but that didn’t trigger the same flair.
It seems that Blizzard now wants to make up for this omission and make the Ashbringer a legendary weapon with the next phase of the Season of Discoveries.
Is this guaranteed to be the Ashbringer?
No, it is not 100% certain yet. However, the indications suggest that it is. Because the 8th phase of the Season of Discoveries is about the Scarlet Crusade and New Avalon. In addition, there is a “legendary weapon quest line for warriors, hunters and paladins” – i.e. all classes that can wield two-handed swords. This encircles the possible legendary weapons very drastically and clearly points to the Ashbringer. So it’s not surprising that the Ashbringer is also one of the 7 most powerful weapons in Azeroth.
