
Ubisoft Apologizes to Japanese Historical Re-Enactment Group for Using Its Flag in Assassin’s Creed Shadows Art Without Permission
Ubisoft has apologized for using a Japanese historical re-enactment group’s flag in concept art for Assassin’s Creed Shadows without permission. The company issued an apology on X/Twitter, acknowledging that it used the flag in two pieces of art without the owner’s consent. The flag belongs to Sekigahara Teppo-tai, a group of volunteers who perform historical re-enactments at festivals and events.
A Flag Used Without Permission
Eagle-eyed fans noticed the identical recreation of the flag in a piece of concept art for the Japan-set Assassin’s Creed released alongside its full reveal. The flag was brought to the attention of a leading member of the Sekigahara Teppo-tai, X/Twitter user @matchlock_kage, who expressed concern about Ubisoft’s unauthorized use of the flag.
Ubisoft’s Apology and Future Plans
Ubisoft has apologized for using the flag without permission and has confirmed that it will no longer use the associated artwork, with one exception: the already printed physical art book featured in the Collector’s Edition of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. While acknowledging the error, Ubisoft has also stated that it strived to make the world of Assassin’s Creed Shadows as authentic as possible.
