Heirlooms in World of Warcraft have had their day. In the past, they were almost mandatory, but now fewer and fewer people use them – because they are bad.

For many years, there was one rule in World of Warcraft when it came to playing secondary characters: the more heirlooms they carry, the better and faster you can level up. This could be quite gold, but you were rewarded with increased speed when leveling and clear comfort.

But that’s long gone. Today, heirlooms are mainly 2 things: a shadow of their former selves and expensive.

What are heirlooms?

Heirlooms are a special form of equipment in World of Warcraft. They can be crafted an infinite number of times via the collection and scale with the level of the respective character as early as level 1. If you carry several of these items, they function as a set and offer some set bonuses, such as the slower consumption of recovery XP.

This is how heirlooms have changed:

Over the course of the expansions, heirlooms have undergone many changes. On the one hand, heirlooms have an extremely large number of upgrade levels, which you have to buy individually with gold for each item. In their basic form, heirlooms only scale up to level 29. If you want more, you have to upgrade the items for a lot of gold. A whole set costs several hundred thousand gold.

A big change was the adjustment of the set bonuses. In the past, heirlooms gave bonus XP as long as they were worn. These bonuses have fallen away over time. Now there is only indirect and temporary bonus XP by using up the character’s recovery bonus more slowly. However, this is only noticeable if the character is not played for a long time during the level phase.

Finally, the heirlooms are also comparatively weak on each level. Often, their strength is lower than that of quest or dungeon rewards. That was different in the past. You could basically carry heirlooms from level 1 to just before the maximum level and only had to exchange them afterwards. The idea: You didn’t have to deal with the equipment when leveling.

This is how the community discusses:

The fact that heirlooms have gotten worse and worse over the course of the last expansions is also much discussed in the WoW community, as was recently the case in a post on the WoW subreddit. There, TechnoCloud624 asks, “Have you stopped using heirlooms too?”

A question that meets with a lot of feedback and, above all, approval. Saelora sees it most positively and says:

They’re useful for the first few levels, ensuring that a new character wears something in each gear slot. But they are no longer worth upgrading.

OkMarsupial also regrets how heirlooms have changed:

I spent a lot of time farming and upgrading them at the Darkmoon Faire, but I don’t use them anymore because they scale so poorly. I think they were unfair to the [Heirloom Gear] level squish.

Heirloom gear has definitely fallen in favor with the player base. However, this is also partly due to the fact that leveling can now be completed in a few hours if you put your mind to it – even without any heirloom equipment. Do you still use these items? Or are they gathering dust in your collection as well?
