With the new depths in World of Warcraft, Cortyn dares to heal for the first time. And it went surprisingly solidly, because Blizzard did a good job.

With the second season of The War Within, the depths have been given a major makeover. Not only are they more fun and interesting, but they now also offer healers the opportunity to explore the depths with Brann as a tank. Because the whole thing also comes with some new achievements, I couldn’t help it, leveled up a new priestess to level 80 (because my shadow priestess will never be holy) and equipped her exclusively via the depths. Now my priestess has reached item level 642 and I can announce with a little pride: I have completed all depths at level 11 as a healer, without a group

Brann as a Tank – More Creative Than Real Tanks

With Brann as a tank, Blizzard has even really come up with something. Because Brann needs healing not only to stay alive, but also to do additional damage:

  • Each time you heal Brann, the healing is converted to a portion of damage that hits all enemies near Brann.
  • Direct heals to Brann increase the damage of his pistol, stacks multiple times.

This ensures that it is best to let Brann lose a few life points and only then start healing. This causes solid damage to all nearby enemies. By “waiting” at the beginning, you also have enough time to distribute a few dots yourself or to throw out one or two damage spells.

The only sticking point for me as a priest were bosses, which actually have to be interrupted because they channel extremely high damage to all characters. I occasionally reached my limits, especially with (still) bad equipment. That’s when you realize that holy priests should maybe get a real interrupt after all these years.

Basically, playing with Brann was extremely fun – especially because he is as moody as a tank as real players. An additional group is often brought in by means of a “body pull” or he screams “You have to dodge!”, only to then run into the area effect himself.

When I ran out of mana, he often set up a campfire for regeneration – only to not wait for it, but to jump into the next group of elite enemies with a run-up.

Pacifist Equipment for Healers – The Perfect Damage Boost

A real blessing was the Brann trinket “Pacifist Equipment” – as recommended in our perfect Burnn equipment for healers. This is because it regularly summons a large mech that you can control yourself for a few seconds. The mech deals extremely high damage to all nearby targets. In its short lifespan of 10 seconds, it can easily do 50 million damage or even more. This can destroy even large groups of enemies extremely quickly.

This is especially strong because you are invulnerable even during this time and the mech has so many life points that it will last until the end anyway.

The disadvantage here, however, is that you can’t heal Brann during this time – because you control the mech. As soon as the announcement comes that the mech is about to land, I had to pump all healing into Brann.

If Brann dies during this time, you should make sure that the mech really kills all current enemies – because then Brann is immediately revived and is ready for use again.

If that didn’t work, then after the mech visit, all the mobs came running to me beaming with joy to show me again where the respawn point is at this depth.

Conclusion: Depths are the perfect introduction to the healer’s life

Was it really difficult in the end? No, probably not. Even though the first lows were the absolute horror, which was due to both the Brann nerfs and the lack of equipment, the later lows were comparatively relaxed. Every single item I was able to swap out made the next depth easier and better.

As a healer, depths can be a bit tough, especially if you don’t use the Brann trinket “Pacifist Equipment”. Then individual depths can take 25 to 30 minutes as a healer.

Nevertheless, I think that depths have taken away some of my “worry” about healing. They were an instructive experience, and when I look at how my behavior has changed from the first to the last healer depth, I can definitely imagine healing in Mythic+ – even if I have to heal 4 wildly bouncing Branns.

That’s why I want to give you all the recommendation: If you’ve given the healing role a wide berth so far because you feel insecure or have a fear of failure – just try it in the setting of depths.

It doesn’t matter if you start at level 11, or only slowly approach it with a 4 or 5. The Depths is an amazingly good “practice mode” in which you can learn a lot, which would otherwise require some (unpleasant) dungeons with fellow players that you have to scratch up from the ground.
