Top 5 video games of all time

Based on a meticulous scoring system, five titles distinguished themselves as the pinnacle of gaming excellence:

  1. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011)

This epic open-world RPG continues to captivate players over a decade after its release. Renowned for its expansive world, deep lore, and robust modding community, Skyrim maintains high ratings from both critics and players. Its immersive narrative and engaging combat system contribute to its enduring appeal and considerable replay value.

  2. Mass Effect 2 (2010)

Building upon its predecessor’s success, Mass Effect 2 delivers a masterful blend of character-driven storytelling and polished gameplay. Widely regarded as the strongest entry in the original trilogy, it impressed with its compelling squadmates, impactful choices, and refined combat mechanics, cementing its place as an Xbox classic.

  3. Garry’s Mod (2006)

More a creative tool than a traditional game, Garry’s Mod offers unparalleled freedom within its physics sandbox. Players can manipulate objects, characters, and environments to craft their own experiences. Its longevity is a testament to its vibrant community, which consistently generates new content and keeps the game endlessly fresh.

  4. Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018)

Rockstar Games crafted an unparalleled journey through the dying days of the Old West with Red Dead Redemption 2. Its breathtaking open world, intricate narrative, and deeply human characters create an incredibly immersive experience. The meticulous attention to detail and emotional depth resonate strongly with players, making every moment meaningful.

  5. Persona 5 (2016)

Persona 5 stands out with its distinctive art style, jazzy soundtrack, and an engaging blend of Japanese role-playing, social simulation, and turn-based combat. Players assume the role of high school students who moonlight as the “Phantom Thieves,” challenging corrupt societal norms through their supernatural abilities in a detailed, character-rich world.

Key findings from the report

Length of video games

The study reveals a significant shift in game length over time. The average top video game today boasts approximately 47.5 hours of content. Notably, games released between 1980 and 2000 averaged only 19 hours, while titles from 2000 to 2025 demonstrate a remarkable jump to 63 hours. This 231% increase reflects a growing player demand for deeper immersion, expansive open worlds, and robust replayability in modern gaming experiences.

Price of video games

Surprisingly, the average price of top-selling games has not risen as sharply as one might expect. In 2000, a leading title typically cost $45, compared to $59.99 in 2024—a modest $14 difference over two decades. Despite some AAA releases now commanding $70 or $80, the data suggests that such steep price tags may deter consumers, favoring instead more affordable games that still offer substantial playable content.

Additional significant discoveries from the report include:

  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time earned the highest combined critic and user ratings of all time.
  • League of Legends offers the most playable hours, nearing an astonishing 2,000 hours of gameplay.
  • Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal are currently the most expensive legacy games, often selling for over $600.
  • In contrast, popular titles like Skyrim and Mass Effect 2 have seen considerable price depreciation and are now available for as little as $5.
  • The PlayStation 4 was identified as the premier console for overall game releases.
  • The year 2004 emerged as the most exceptional year in gaming history for new releases.

Best franchises of all time

Evaluating entire series, the report crowned the Super Smash Bros. franchise as the best of all time. This achievement is based on consistently high average critic and player ratings, coupled with respectable playable content hours and a reasonable average price for individual titles within the series. For example, Super Smash Bros. Brawl stood out with strong user reception.

Other top-performing franchises include:

  • Rock Band: Praised for its strong critic ratings and engaging rhythm gameplay.
  • Borderlands: Valued for its unique art style, cooperative play, and extensive content.
  • Half-Life: Revered for its groundbreaking narrative and innovative gameplay, despite shorter playtimes.
  • Baldur’s Gate: Recognized for its exceptional role-playing depth and narrative complexity.

Conversely, the data indicated that the Sonic the Hedgehog series ranked last among the top-selling video game franchises analyzed.

Video games with the biggest price increases since release

The analysis clearly demonstrates Nintendo’s dominance in retaining and increasing the value of its older titles. A significant majority of games that have seen the greatest price appreciation are from iconic Nintendo franchises, including Mario, Pokémon, and The Legend of Zelda. The Pokémon series, in particular, showcases remarkable investment returns, with titles like Gold, Silver, and Crystal now commanding prices exceeding $600. Other entries such as Ruby, Sapphire, Red, Blue, and Yellow also exhibit substantial increases, typically fetching between $250 and $350, largely due to their collectibility and nostalgic appeal.

Video games with the biggest price decreases since release

On the opposite end of the spectrum, many popular modern titles have experienced considerable price depreciation since their initial launch. Games like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Mass Effect 2, despite their high critical acclaim and player satisfaction, are now available for a fraction of their original cost. Factors contributing to these significant price drops include widespread digital distribution, frequent sales, the release of enhanced editions, and their sheer abundance in the secondary market. This trend highlights how accessibility and continued availability can impact a game’s market value over time.

Best years for video game releases

The year 2004 stands out as the most exceptional period for video game releases. This year saw an incredible density of highly influential and acclaimed titles, including Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Gran Turismo 4, Halo 2, and The Sims 2. These games collectively received high average critic and player ratings, often offering substantial playable content. Other strong years for gaming include 2007 (featuring Super Mario Galaxy), 1997 (with Age of Empires), and 2011 (home to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim), each contributing significant classics to gaming history.

Best consoles for video game releases

Based on the overall quality and value of their game libraries, the PlayStation 4 ranked as the top console. Its ecosystem consistently delivered highly-rated games with ample playable content at an attractive average price of just $15 per title. Surprisingly, the PlayStation 5 did not make the top ten, primarily due to higher game prices and slightly lower user satisfaction scores. The Wii U also made a notable appearance in the top tier, defying its lower sales figures with a strong roster of games, high user ratings, and affordable titles.

Consoles with the highest increase to their top video game prices

Consoles predominantly associated with Nintendo, such as the Game Boy, Nintendo 64, and GameCube, show the highest appreciation in their top game prices. This trend is largely driven by the rarity and strong collector demand for classic Nintendo intellectual properties. These older platform titles, especially complete-in-box copies, have become valuable collector’s items, reflecting the brand’s enduring legacy and dedicated fan base.

Consoles with the highest decrease in their top video game prices

Platforms like the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and even the PlayStation 4 have experienced the most significant decreases in the market value of their top games. This depreciation is common for consoles with widespread sales and extensive digital libraries. The vast availability of games, coupled with frequent digital discounts and the transition to newer console generations, contributes to the rapid decline in physical game prices on these platforms.

Market predictions

Anna Zhang, Marketing Manager at iGV, shared her insights on these findings. She noted a clear industry trend: “Video games are becoming longer, and players expect more content without proportional price increases. This places significant pressure on developers to create larger, more elaborate games without raising costs significantly.” Zhang anticipates that the rising prices of new AAA titles, now often exceeding $80, will influence consumer behavior. “Gamers may increasingly opt for more affordable indie or ‘cozy’ games that offer great value and engaging experiences at lower price points, potentially shifting market demand away from traditional blockbuster releases,” she added.

Methodology

This study analyzed 257 top-rated video games using a composite ranking approach to identify the best titles. Each game was evaluated across four essential metrics: Critic Rating, Player Rating, Time to Finish (hours), and its current Complete-in-Box (CIB) Price. Primary rating data was sourced from Metacritic, with MobyGames used for supplementary player ratings, normalized to a 10-point scale for consistency. The composite score prioritized higher critic and player ratings, longer playtimes for increased content value, and lower CIB prices for better affordability. Additionally, the study extended its analysis to determine top-performing franchises, gaming platforms, and release years by averaging composite scores within those respective categories.
