**Dark and Darker Gone From Steam: iGV**

All Content in Steam Related to Dark and Darker Was Removed

The indie dungeon crawler sensation, Dark and Darker, experienced a significant setback when all its content was removed from Steam. This action followed a cease and desist notice issued by Nexon, a major South Korean game developer. The removal involved the disappearance of videos, screenshots, and ultimately, the game itself from the Steam store. Attempts to access the game through Steam now redirect users to the main storefront page.

Initially, players observed changes such as missing media assets on the game’s Steam page. Subsequently, multiplayer functionality, including PvP and co-op modes, ceased to function. This culminated in the complete removal of Dark and Darker from the platform, leaving fans disappointed and raising questions about the game’s future accessibility via Steam. The abrupt delisting has stirred considerable discussion within the gaming community.

Matters Escalated, Getting the Police Involved

The dispute between Nexon and IRONMACE, the developers of Dark and Darker, intensified when Nexon accused IRONMACE of intellectual property theft. These accusations led to a police raid on IRONMACE’s offices. Law enforcement officials sought to seize materials potentially related to the alleged misappropriation of Nexon’s assets.

Korean media reported that the raid took place at IRONMACE’s headquarters located in Seongnam, Gyeonggi. According to a statement made on Discord by someone claiming to be an IRONMACE employee, the search concluded quickly and without the police discovering the evidence they were seeking. However, the gravity of the situation underscores the seriousness of the claims made by Nexon and the potential legal ramifications for IRONMACE.

IRONMACE has publicly refuted Nexon’s claims. One of the game’s developers issued a statement on the official Discord server stating that they developed their code independently and acquired most assets from the Unreal Engine Marketplace. They further stated that all game design documents and other creative elements were produced internally.

Dark and Darker Bears Similarity Toward One of Nexon’s Projects

The core of the legal conflict stems from Nexon’s assertion that Dark and Darker bears significant resemblance to “Project P3,” one of Nexon’s unreleased game projects. Project P3 was first unveiled in August 2021. The project pivoted in March 2022 from a medieval fantasy theme to a modern survival scenario involving firearms, resulting in a name change to “Project P7.”

It is speculated that former Nexon employees who worked on Project P3 subsequently left the company and formed IRONMACE, continuing the development of the original Project P3 concept, which ultimately became Dark and Darker. The founder of IRONMACE, Park Sueng Ha, previously worked at Nexon and contributed to Project P3. The individual in charge of Project P3 was terminated in July 2021 for allegedly leaking thousands of files associated with the project.

Adding further complexity to the situation, reports suggest that approximately half of the IRONMACE team comprises individuals who previously worked on Project P3, including the aforementioned “Leader A” who was fired for leaking files. This overlap in personnel and alleged similarities between the games are central to the ongoing dispute and the reason for the DMCA takedown.

Dark and Darker’s Future

Following the delisting of Dark and Darker, IRONMACE issued a statement on their Discord channel acknowledging the situation. They assured fans that they are collaborating with their legal team to determine the best course of action. Citing the sensitive and ongoing legal proceedings, they requested patience and understanding from the community while they work to resolve the matter.

The controversy surrounding Dark and Darker has significantly impacted the game’s momentum. The timing is particularly unfortunate, as the delisting occurred just weeks before a scheduled playtest. The game’s planned full release, initially targeted for the end of the year, is now uncertain pending the resolution of the legal issues.

The game’s fans have responded to the situation with mixed emotions. Some have expressed their support for IRONMACE, while others have directed their frustration towards Nexon, even going so far as to review bomb Nexon’s title, *MapleStory*, on Steam. The future of Dark and Darker hinges on the outcome of the legal battle and IRONMACE’s ability to navigate these challenging circumstances.
