Stardew Chicken Guide: Collect 'Em All!

How to Collect Every Type of Chicken in Stardew Valley

Chickens are a delightful and profitable addition to any farm in Stardew Valley. Beyond the standard fare, there are several unique chicken types to collect, each requiring different methods to obtain. This guide will walk you through the process of acquiring every feathery friend, from the common to the exceptionally rare.

Basic Chickens: White and Brown

These are the most common and easily obtainable chickens. Here’s how to get them:

  • Building a Coop: Begin by visiting Robin at the Carpenter’s Shop and purchasing a Coop for 4,000 gold, 300 wood, and 100 stone. This is essential to house your chickens.
  • Purchasing from Marnie: Once the coop is built, head to Marnie’s Ranch. She sells chickens for 800 gold each.
  • Random Color Assignment: The color of the chicken (white or brown) is randomly assigned when you purchase it.
  • The Naming Trick: If you want a specific color, you can cancel the purchase during the naming screen and try again until you get the desired color.
  • Incubation: Upgrade to a Big Coop to unlock the incubator. Incubating eggs has the same random color assignment as purchasing.

Blue Chickens

Blue chickens aren’t available from the start. You need to deepen your relationship with a particular villager:

  • Befriend Shane: You must reach eight hearts friendship with Shane. This involves talking to him daily and giving him gifts he likes.
  • Trigger the Cutscene: Upon reaching eight hearts, a special cutscene with Shane will trigger, introducing his blue chickens.
  • Availability at Marnie’s: After the cutscene, blue chickens become a possible option when buying from Marnie.
  • 25% Chance: There is a 25% chance of purchasing or hatching a blue chicken.
  • Patience is Key: As with white and brown chickens, you can cancel and retry purchases or incubation if you don’t get a blue chicken on the first try.

Void Chickens

Void Chickens are a bit more mysterious and require a touch of luck and patience:

  • The Witch Event: Each night, there’s a small (1%) chance a witch will fly over your coop or slime hutch.
  • Void Egg Gift: If the witch selects a coop, she’ll leave behind a Void Egg.
  • Incubate the Egg: Place the Void Egg in the incubator inside your upgraded coop.
  • Hatching a Void Chicken: After a few days, the Void Egg will hatch into a Void Chicken.
  • Functionality: Void Chickens function like regular chickens, but they lay Void Eggs. These can be turned into Void Mayonnaise, which sells for a higher price than regular mayonnaise.

Golden Chickens

Golden Chickens are the most valuable and require significant dedication to unlock:

  • Achieve Perfection: This is the most challenging requirement. You must achieve Perfection in the game, which involves a long list of tasks.
  • Perfection Tasks: These include shipping every item, maxing out friendships with all villagers, mastering all skills, completing all recipes, and finishing Monster Eradication Goals, along with many others.
  • Golden Egg Purchase: After reaching Perfection, you can purchase a Golden Egg for 100,000 gold from Marnie or for 100 Qi Gems at Mr. Qi’s Walnut Room.
  • Rare Alternative: Golden Eggs can sometimes appear in treasure chests while fishing or during another witch event, but this is rare.
  • Incubation: Place the Golden Egg in the incubator. It will hatch into a Golden Chicken.
  • Golden Egg Production: Golden Chickens lay Golden Eggs daily, which can be sold for a significant profit.
