As you advance in Clash of Clans, you’ll encounter more enemy players trying to steal your resources and conquer your base. A common rookie mistake is focusing too much on defending the town hall, thinking that’s the key to winning battles. The truth is, you’re destined to lose some battles as you upgrade your town hall. It’s unavoidable! Losses can actually be advantageous, as you’ll earn a shield that prevents attacks. Instead of fixating on defending your town hall, prioritize safeguarding your gold, elixir, and eventually your clan castle. Build your wall around these resources and defensive towers, leaving the town hall outside. This way, even if you lose, you’ll preserve your loot and get a shield to protect you further.
Save Your Gems for Builders
Clash of Clans is a free-to-play game, but it heavily encourages in-app gem purchases. A major reason for this is the Builder Huts. These huts allow you to acquire additional builders who can work on your village. You start with two builders, the third costs 500 gems, and each subsequent builder doubles in price. To unlock all five builders, you’ll need to fork out 2000 gems, which are not easy to obtain. If you plan to play the game for free, save every single gem you earn for your builders. This will require patience, as you’ll need to complete tasks and achievements over time, but it’s definitely possible. Spending money on gems is fine, but prioritize your Builders first, as they’re your best investment.
Attacking: Take it Slow
You might be tempted to attack relentlessly at the beginning of your Clash of Clans journey. But it’s wise to take things slow for a while (we’re talking Town Hall level 5 or 6). If you climb the trophy ladder too quickly, you’ll end up facing significantly stronger opponents who will strip you of your resources. This can hinder your progress and be frustrating. It’s also important to remember that your resources, especially at lower levels, are better spent on defense. You could waste gold and elixir upgrading systems just to fight opponents you can’t defeat because you’re in a higher-level tier. Focus on upgrading your buildings, saving resources, and leveling up your town hall as quickly as possible, all while keeping your trophy level low. At the very least, wait for the 3-day shield to wear off while you’re bolstering your base defenses.
Don’t Waste Resources: Avoid Your Cap
If your storage is full, you’ll hit your resource cap. This is bad news because it means you’re wasting resources and losing out on valuable time. There are a couple of ways to prevent this. First, spend your resources as often as possible. Whether you invest in troops or buildings is up to you, but spending ensures you can earn more. Second, constantly upgrade your gold and elixir storage, although this can take up builders that you may need for other projects. If you do hit your cap, don’t stress too much, it happens to everyone.
Keep Your Troops Stocked (and Your Builders Busy)
A big part of Clash of Clans’ appeal is that there’s almost always something you can do to improve your game. As you progress, though, upgrade times and troop training times will get longer, so it’s crucial to manage your energy wisely. Before you go to bed, check your builder progress. When you wake up, check again and assign any available builders to tasks. If all your builders are occupied, look ahead to your next upgrade and decide if you need to raid for resources first. Troop training also takes time, so start training before you raid and always keep your barracks full when you’re using troops.
Join a Clan (or Several!)
Joining a clan seems obvious, considering the game is called “Clash of Clans.” But many players delay joining for too long. Clans offer much more than just a fun way to connect with other players or friends. You can request troops from clan members, participate in Clan Wars, and join Clan Games when Supercell hosts them.
