Marathon Director Out in Bungie Shakeup, Layoff Fears Loom

Bungie Replaces Marathon Director Amid Leadership Shakeup, Fears of Layoffs

Recent events at Bungie have cast a shadow over the studio’s future, with internal anxieties rising following last year’s layoffs. Now, the focus shifts to Marathon, Bungie’s ambitious project aimed at expanding beyond the Destiny universe. A significant leadership change has taken place, fueling further uncertainty within the company.

Marathon Over Matter

The creative direction of Marathon is undergoing a substantial shift, including the replacement of Christopher Barrett, a long-time Bungie designer, as the game director. Joe Ziegler, formerly the game director of Valorant at Riot Games, is stepping into the role. Bungie has been approached for an official statement regarding Barrett’s continued involvement with the company. Following the announcement, Ziegler verified his appointment as the game director on X/Twitter. Despite this, the game’s direction has shifted somewhat under Ziegler’s leadership, with one major change being the move towards a selectable cast of heroes instead of custom player characters.

  • Christopher Barrett replaced by Joe Ziegler as Game Director.
  • Ziegler confirmed appointment on X/Twitter.
  • Game direction shifting under new leadership.
  • Shift away from custom player characters.

A Marathon, and a Sprint

The pressure to deliver Marathon is high, with resources being poured into the project. This prioritization comes at a time when concerns about the studio’s financial health are escalating. Following the release of the upcoming Destiny 2 expansion, The Final Shape, there are rumors of potential layoffs. Concerns arise from perceived budget imbalances within the company, necessitating either significant success with The Final Shape or other cost-cutting measures. This also includes the recent cancellation of the new IP known as Matter back in 2020, and the team continuing to work on a similar project before it was also cancelled.

The atmosphere is tense, and there is a growing expectation that Bungie senior leaders will leave in the summer of 2026, after their final payouts from Sony’s acquisition of Bungie are complete. This is fueling the urgency to ship Marathon before the leadership changes occur, with those who take over the company focusing on sustaining it.

  • Fears of layoffs following The Final Shape release.
  • Concerns regarding financial stability.
  • Urgency to release Marathon before potential senior leadership departures in 2026.
  • Cancellation of new IPs
