LoL Key Fragments: Better Experiences

Hextech Crafting Outlined

League of Legends’ Hextech Crafting, introduced in 2016, fundamentally reshaped the game’s reward system. This system revolves around opening chests and capsules for various items. Crucially, many chests require keys, which are forged from key fragments. Understanding the acquisition of these fragments is key to maximizing your experience.

  • Champion Capsules: These capsules, often awarded for leveling, contain champion shards and sometimes blue essence. No keys are needed to open them.
  • Mastery Chests: Earned for achieving high performance (S-, S, or S+) on a champion. A cap of one per season and once every 7 days limits their availability. You can also purchase Hextech Chests with Riot Points (RP).
  • Key Acquisition: Three key fragments are combined to create one key. A maximum of 12 key fragments can be collected in a 4-week cycle. This limitation encourages players to spend RP or actively participate in the gameplay systems for rewards. This also encourages the players to seek and maintain a good honor level.

Reworked Honor System

Prior to season seven, the in-game honor system lacked significant rewards. Riot addressed this by revamping the system. This updated system introduced an active participation component for players in post-game team interactions. A key mechanic is post-game voting to raise and lower honor levels.

Changed System, Changed Rewards

Season eight introduced significant adjustments to the honor system’s rewards. Now, it features a checkpoint system to incentivize positive gameplay. These checkpoints offer rewards that increase in value with increased honor levels. Reaching level two in the honour system is the first step for obtaining rewards.

  • Checkpoints: Honor levels are broken into checkpoints. The rewards associated with each level have differing values which motivate players to work toward higher honor ranks. Level 2 is the start and Level 5 the maximum level.

No Longer the Key Fragments You Once Knew

Previously, key fragments were linked to wins. Now, these fragments are almost exclusively connected to the revamped honor system. Toxic players or those unwilling to spend money are significantly impacted. Those who earn penalties, like chat restrictions, will fall below the level two threshold for rewards. Conversely, players with high honor levels gain access to a vast number of key fragments through random drops, honor level checkpoints and honorable orbs.

  • Honor-Based Acquisition: Key fragments are directly tied to honor levels. Achieving a level two checkpoint provides two key fragments. Reaching levels three, four, and five unlocks honor capsules containing fragments proportional to the honor level. These capsules do not require a key to open. Honor level 3 capsules have three key fragments, level 4 contains four, and 5 or more capsules contain three. An ever-present cap of 12 fragments exists, regardless of how quickly a player advances through the honor system.
  • Random Drops: Players at honor level two or above have a chance at random key fragment drops throughout their playtime. This encourages players to keep the client open.

A Focus on Money and Attitude

Riot’s primary goal is monetization. The key fragment system, intertwined with the chest system, creates a constant incentive for players to spend money on RP to obtain more keys and rewards. With the recent honor-based approach, Riot is steering players towards positive behavior to unlock rewards. A positive gaming environment will, in turn, generate more revenue for Riot.

  • Monetization Strategy: The key fragment and chest system remains a key monetization strategy for Riot. The limitation of key fragment and capsule collection incentivizes players to spend money. This, combined with emphasis on positive gameplay behavior, ensures consistent revenue for Riot.
  • Promoting Positive Play: The link between positive in-game behavior (through the Honor system) and key fragments strongly suggests a shift towards encouraging more positive player interaction, ultimately increasing player enjoyment.
