Kujou Sara's Complete Backstory & Vision Explained

Character Story

Kujou Sara stands as a prominent figure within Inazuma, serving as the

General of the Tenryou Commission and a fiercely loyal subordinate to the Raiden Shogun. Her journey began not within the Kujou Clan, but as a Tengu found unconscious by the roadside. This fateful discovery by Kujou Takayuki, the head of the commission, marked a turning point in her life. Seeing that she already possessed an Electro Vision, Takayuki believed her to be a child favored by destiny, destined for greatness. He adopted her, giving her the name Sara, and thus began her integration into human society and military life, shaping her into the formidable leader she is today.

A Childhood of Discipline and Purpose

Growing up within the Kujou household was a unique experience for Sara. Unlike typical children, her playtime companions were the soldiers of the Tenryou Commission. Witnessing her playmates being disciplined for their behavior, a sense of responsibility quickly settled upon young Sara. She understood that a leader must set an example and not be a distraction. This realization prompted her to distance herself from casual play and dedicate her efforts entirely to rigorous training. She internalized the expectation that she would one day command the army, pouring all her energy into honing her skills, both martial and strategic, to meet these high demands. Her dedication was unwavering, leading to a swift and impressive rise through the military ranks.

The General’s Strict Regimen

Sara’s strict discipline extends far beyond the battlefield, permeating every aspect of her daily existence. She adheres to a meticulous schedule, from her training routines to her precise meal portions. Every standard she sets for herself is followed without deviation, reflecting her belief in absolute order and self-control. This unwavering adherence to her principles is also evident in her personal living space. Her house must be impeccably organized, with every surface spotless and every item in its designated place. She views maintaining her home as another form of training, refusing the assistance of servants to ensure she personally upholds these rigorous standards. To prevent any well-meaning interference, she even famously placed a sign that read, “Training in Progress. Do Not Disturb.”

Maintaining Tengu Roots and Compassion

Despite her upbringing among humans and her stringent military duties, Sara never truly severed her connection to her Tengu heritage. She frequently ventures into the wild mountains, seeking solitude and revisiting the natural world of her ancestors. During one such excursion, she encountered a group of bake-danuki, mischievous creatures known for causing minor disturbances by pilfering items from the city. While the local authorities were stumped, Sara, through her understanding of the wild and her intimidating presence, successfully convinced the bake-danuki to cease their thievery and respect the law. From then on, her mountain visits often included leaving offerings of melons and other sturdy foods near their dwelling, a quiet gesture of respect and goodwill towards the creatures of her original home.

Unwavering Devotion to the Raiden Shogun

Beneath Kujou Sara’s cool and composed demeanor lies a profound and fervent devotion to the Raiden Shogun. This deep loyalty is the driving force behind her every action and decision. It might surprise many to learn of her hidden passion for collecting Raiden Shogun memorabilia. She was notably among the first in line to acquire a highly sought-after, limited edition lacquerware statue of the Electro Archon. This cherished item has a special place in her home, displayed within one of five dedicated cases. She ritualistically cleans these display cases as a form of meditation and relaxation, feeling it brings her closer to the Shogun. This act also serves to reinforce her unwavering resolve and reminds her of her ultimate purpose: to serve the Raiden Shogun, whom she sees as her savior and the very reason for her continued existence.

How Did Kujou Sara Get Her Vision

The story of Kujou Sara’s Vision endowment begins long before her adoption into the Kujou Clan, during her time as a young, nameless Tengu. Her homeland faced a dire threat from a malevolent force, and despite her youth and relatively small stature, she bravely joined the fight. She felt an overwhelming desire to protect her home, yet recognized her own limitations against such a formidable foe. In the midst of a fierce battle, tragedy struck. Severely injured, with her wings damaged, she fell from a perilous cliff. As she plummeted, closing her eyes to what seemed like an inevitable end, her mind was consumed by a single, burning thought: an unyielding desire to safeguard her beloved home and its people forever. This profound, selfless wish, born from despair yet filled with absolute conviction, proved to be the catalyst for her destiny.

A Miraculous Survival and a New Beginning

Against all odds, the young Tengu survived her fall. The following day, a group of travelers discovered her unconscious by the roadside. Though clearly roughed up by the ordeal, she was miraculously unharmed, a puzzle no one could explain. Noticing the strange, glowing gem she clutched – an Electro Vision – the travelers reported their discovery to the Tenryou Commission. Upon learning of the girl and her Vision, Kujou Takayuki, the head of the commission, perceived this as a clear sign of divine favor. He interpreted it as a mark of destiny, believing she was chosen for a significant purpose. He decided to take her in, naming her Sara, and committing to raise her as a disciplined soldier and future general. Her physical home had changed, but the powerful will and the deep desire to protect that led to her Vision remained steadfast within her heart.

The Archon’s Gaze and the Nature of Visions

Sara’s Vision, an Electro element, is particularly significant given her deep loyalty to the Raiden Shogun. It is believed that the strength of her unyielding will and her unwavering desire to protect, even after being displaced, resonated with the Electro Archon’s concept of “Eternity.” This aligns with the idea that Visions are granted to individuals whose ambitions strongly reflect the ideals of an Archon. However, the exact mechanics of Vision granting remain shrouded in mystery. The Raiden Shogun herself has stated that Archons do not directly control who receives a Vision, implying a more complex process involving both the individual’s “will” and another, undefined “factor.” This statement became particularly prominent during the Vision Hunt Decree, when no new Electro Visions were granted, suggesting a potential influence, direct or indirect, from the Archon’s will on the flow of new Visions, despite her claims.

The Enigma of Vision Granting and Sara’s Purpose

The “other factor” mentioned by the Raiden Shogun in the context of Vision granting remains one of Teyvat’s enduring mysteries. While Archons may not hand them out personally, their ideals certainly seem to play a role. For Sara, her Electro Vision is not merely a tool for combat; it is a tangible symbol of her inherent drive to safeguard and her deep commitment to the ideals of Inazuma, as embodied by the Raiden Shogun. Her survival and the receiving of her Vision at such a critical juncture in her life solidified her belief in a greater purpose and fueled her unwavering dedication to the Electro Archon. It serves as a constant reminder of the moment her resolve was recognized by Celestia, cementing her path as a devoted general who embodies strength and steadfast loyalty. Her Vision is a direct extension of her core identity, a testament to her protective spirit and her eventual alignment with the Shogun’s pursuit of eternity for Inazuma.
