What are EverQuest Progression Servers?
EverQuest Progression Servers (PSs) offer a unique way to experience the game’s evolution. Unlike standard EverQuest servers, which are constantly updated, PSs retain the feel of a specific era of the game. These servers emulate the progression of the game from earlier time periods, allowing players to experience the game as it was in the past while still retaining access to some of the latest updates. This careful balance allows players to enjoy the classic experience, yet still benefit from quality-of-life improvements and evolving content.
These servers prioritize the atmosphere of the past, often incorporating some of the improvements and additions made throughout the game’s development. This means that while retaining the spirit of older versions, PSs will often have improvements made to the user interface (UI), updated environments, and modified combat balance and interactions. These enhancements ensure that the nostalgic experience is enhanced with a modern touch and don’t feel outdated. This also means that players can still engage in the community and activities from that era with fewer compatibility issues compared to a completely isolated server.
Currently, there are eight active progression servers. Each server employs a slightly different update schedule and player experience. Some prioritize the exact time-locked experience of a specific era, while others have a more dynamic schedule that allows for the continuous evolution of the game’s content.
Types of EverQuest Progression Servers
-
Player Progression
-
Time-locked servers: Some PSs (Selo, Mangler, Coirnav, and Phinigel) follow a set update schedule, introducing new content after a set timeframe. The time frame varies for each server.
-
Era-locked servers: Servers like Agnarr are limited to a specific era of the game’s content, meaning they won’t receive any future updates beyond that point. This makes them ideal for experiencing a particular era and community within the game’s history.
-
Voting-based servers: Other PSs (Lockjaw, Ragefire, and Fippy Darkpaw) update through player-initiated votes after certain milestones. This approach balances historical adherence with ongoing community input in determining the pace of the server’s evolution.
-
Different EXP rates: The servers vary significantly in their experience (EXP) rates. Some, like Selo, offer a faster progression pace, allowing players to level up quickly. Conversely, others, like Coirnav and Phinigel, maintain a slower pace, emphasizing the experience and progression of earlier versions of the game. Players can find a server that aligns with their desired play style.

More Notes
-
Character transfer restrictions: Transferring characters between Progression Servers is not permitted, with only certain limited exceptions between servers, meaning players will need to start new characters on each server. Transfers from PS to live servers are possible.
-
Content availability: Content like races, classes, and items often unlock as the relevant game updates are added. This can be an added dimension, where players can look forward to the arrival of new content and be rewarded for their dedication.
-
Server-specific rules: Each PS may have additional specific rules regarding events, items, and other aspects of the gameplay. Players should review the specific details of each server to ensure they understand the rules in place.
In essence, Progression Servers allow players to enjoy EverQuest at different points in its evolution, each with its own unique character and flavor. They provide a powerful way for players to reconnect with the past while also benefiting from quality-of-life enhancements and the excitement of constantly evolving content. Carefully selecting the right server can lead to a personalized and rewarding gaming experience.
