Manor Lords provides players with three animal options for logistical support: oxen, horses, and pack mules. It is crucial to recognize that their jobs do not overlap, so understanding their individual jobs is essential. This knowledge helps you to strategically invest in the right type of animal to optimize your resource management and overall efficiency.
Oxen: These are the workhorses (or work-oxen!) of your settlement. They excel at heavy labor tasks. They are perfect for hauling lumber, essential for early construction and expansion. Oxen are also used to plow fields, which streamlines the farming process and helps you create a plentiful food supply. Upgrading them also allows the transportation of goods within the territory which boosts resource production.
Horses: These animals are primarily intended to boost the speed of your trading network. By utilizing horses, you can considerably shorten the time needed for your traders to move between trading zones. They will enable your traders to return and depart more often, significantly improving your trade efficiency. If you intend to create a robust trade economy, acquiring and utilizing horses is highly advised.
Pack Mules: These animals are suited for moving goods between regions you control. They excel in transporting resources like ale or meat from one settlement to another. Pack mules use a barter system for transactions, differing from horses that deal with wealth. While not as swift as horses, pack mules can carry larger loads. This allows for efficient distribution of essential goods within your expanding domain.
When Should You Use Oxen, Horses, or Pack Mules
Each animal plays a specific role, so ideally, you’ll want to acquire all three as your settlement grows. While your villagers can perform tasks without animal assistance, utilizing them increases work efficiency. Remember to correctly assign animals to corresponding work stations to prevent them from wandering off.
- Early Game: Focus on Oxen to improve construction and resource gathering.
- Mid Game: Introduce Horses to Trading Posts when establishing trade routes.

How Do You Get Ox, Horse, and Pack Mules in Manor Lords?
To acquire livestock, you’ll need to build specific structures and use Regional Wealth. This is how you get the animals:
- Trading Post: Used to purchase Horses.
- Hitching Post: Used to purchase Oxen.
Each animal costs Regional Wealth (typically around 30 for Horses and 20 for Oxen). Buy the animals you need, but ensure you have enough space in your Stables. If not, the animals will wander off and escape. Upgrade existing Hitching Posts or build new ones to increase livestock capacity.
To get Pack Mules, you will need to build a Packing Station in one of your regions.
When Should You Get an Ox or A Horse
In the beginning, focus on getting Oxen. They are essential for accelerating development. Oxen make the construction process faster, allowing you to swiftly grow your settlement and improve productivity. Fill your stables with oxen. Start with two, then grow to at least eight.
Once your settlement is thriving, consider horses. Horses are crucial when you want to start trading and expand your economy. While villagers can trade on their own, horses increase trade speed. Designate some stables for horses to support trading. Ensure the number of horses assigned to the Trading Post equals the number of families who work there.
Pack Mules are a late-game asset. Establish a Packing Station in one region to act as a central hub. You don’t need additional stations in other regions. Once the station is set up, freely exchange goods between regions. This improves your logistical capabilities as your territory grows.
