What Exactly Are Scavs?
In Escape from Tarkov, Scavs are the game’s underbelly, representing the outlaws and criminals who inhabit the city of Tarkov. They’re not a unified force, but rather individual raiders and gangs, each with their own agendas. They operate largely independently, though they’ll sometimes band together. Their motives revolve around acquiring loot, making them a significant threat to any player, PMC (Player-Managed Character) or otherwise.
While many Scavs are AI-controlled, some are played by other players, giving them unpredictability. This inherent unpredictability presents a challenge as players cannot know their intentions. Occasionally, a Scav may exhibit friendliness, but trust should always be considered a luxury.
Scavs are driven by the desire for resources, making them constantly alert and capable of surprising encounters. Encountering a group of Scavs can be a dangerous proposition, as they often prove more challenging than a single AI Scav.
Why Play Scav Mode?
Scav mode in Escape from Tarkov offers a unique perspective on the game’s world, providing a different gameplay experience than playing as a PMC. There’s no structured goal; instead, players are free to explore and engage in Tarkov’s environments according to their own strategies.
- Loot Acquisition: Scavs can collect a wealth of valuable items, including PMC loot and equipment.
- Exploration and Learning: Scav mode allows players to learn the layouts and dangers of the various maps without risking their PMC character’s equipment and progress.
- Grinding for Equipment: Players can consistently collect desirable equipment that can be utilized in other game modes.
This mode allows players to gather valuable resources without worrying about losing their progress in other modes, making it an effective way to acquire high-quality gear.
Scav Mode Basics
Scav mode’s gameplay differs significantly from PMC mode. Players are dropped into the Tarkov environment with a few key restrictions and advantages.
- Random Spawn Locations: Scavs typically spawn further away from PMC spawns, leading to different routes and interactions.
- Limited Equipment: Each Scav spawn comes with randomly assigned equipment, necessitating adaptability and resourcefulness.
- Potential for Scav-on-Scav Violence: Players might encounter other Scavs, both AI and human, either hostile or friendly. Always be cautious of other players.
- No Carried Equipment: Players cannot bring any of their existing equipment, forcing them to acquire gear during each raid.
This dynamic gameplay loop encourages players to adapt to various situations, prioritize loot acquisition, and learn the environments thoroughly.
Leveling Up as a Scav
Scav leveling provides a separate progression from a PMC character, allowing for specialization in Scav activities. These actions and outcomes directly contribute to Scav experience.
- Looting: Collecting resources from dead bodies is a fundamental aspect of gaining experience.
- PMC and Scav Combat: Successfully engaging with PMCs or other Scavs rewards the Scav character.
- Fence Tasks: Completing tasks at the Fence, a significant element in the game, boosts Scav experience.
- Boss Encounters: Defeating Scav bosses in Tarkov can drastically increase Scav experience and unlocks new abilities and interactions.
Increased Scav levels can enhance loot collection, reduce hostility from Scav bosses, and unlock valuable advantages for future raids. Importantly, Scav levels do not affect the player’s PMC progression.
