The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Hands-On Preview: It Lets You Test Out Your Craziest Ideas
Will you have completed Breath of the Wild before starting Tears of the Kingdom?
This poll is designed to gauge the pre-existing Zelda fandom’s readiness for Tears of the Kingdom. Do you plan to dive into the new game with the depth of prior knowledge? Or will you embark on this adventure fresh?
A World of Unbounded Possibilities
The sheer scale of Tears of the Kingdom is undeniable. Building upon the foundation of Breath of the Wild, this sequel offers a truly astonishing amount of exploration and activity. But what struck me most wasn’t just the sheer volume, but the unprecedented creative freedom. The philosophy of Breath of the Wild is, “See a landmark? Walk there.” Tears of the Kingdom transcends this; it’s more like, “See a landmark? There are a hundred ways to get there, some ingenious, some hilariously flawed, but the payoff when you crack the code is immense.”
Soaring Above Hyrule
The Sky Islands, scattered high above Hyrule, dominate a significant portion of my hands-on experience. These floating islands, reminiscent of The Wind Waker, yet devoid of a whimsical red boat, present a realm of puzzle-solving and exploration. The freedom to traverse between them, and overcome their unique challenges, fuels a sense of excitement. It’s not just about reaching a destination; it’s about how you get there.
New Abilities and Tools
- Ultrahand: This new ability, a refinement of Sheikah Slate powers, allows players to manipulate objects with unprecedented precision, pushing, pulling, rotating, and attaching them to one another. While organic matter is excluded, innovative solutions arise from the unexpected interactions between objects and environmental elements. A stranded Korok, for instance, could be rescued and transported, highlighting the game’s playful approach to problem-solving.
- Zonai Devices: Scattered throughout the world are capsule-like structures containing these innovative items. They unlock new ways to manipulate the environment, offering limitless possibilities for customization. Imagine a rocket-shaped Zonai device attached to your shield, granting rocket jumps for unparalleled aerial mobility.
- Fuse: This functionality extends the game’s customizability by allowing players to combine items and materials found throughout the world. This enhances weapons, shields, and even arrows, offering a vibrant system of weapon enhancement and personalization. A simple sword can transform into a formidable spiky ball weapon, showcasing the game’s creative potential.
Unconventional Solutions and the Travel Medallion
Trial and error, ingenuity, and a healthy dose of “Why did I think that was a good idea?” are hallmarks of the game’s approach to puzzle-solving. The Travel Medallion offers a clever solution to avoid frustrating backtracking. Players can drop it anywhere on the map and instantly teleport back to that location, encouraging exploration and experimentation without the fear of becoming lost in the landscape.
Sustained Performance
The technical performance during my preview was exceptional. The framerate remained stable across various environments, particularly in the Sky Islands. This is a significant improvement from potential performance dips in dense areas of Breath of the Wild. This stability suggests the game is optimized to accommodate the vastness and complexity of the world while maintaining a smooth experience. However, we’ll have to observe how the game handles dense forest environments as Link ventures below the clouds.
A Fresh Perspective on Zelda
Tears of the Kingdom stands apart from previous entries, not just in terms of its scale, but in the evolution of player interaction. Many animations, items, and even the general aesthetic, share a likeness to Breath of the Wild, however this is offset by the significant enhancement of player interaction and the ability to apply creativity. The plethora of solutions to problems and conflicts offers a surprising amount of possibilities. This game’s core essence is thrilling because it encourages creative problem-solving, adding an irresistible level of engagement. With the creative freedom inherent in the game, I expect the player base will come up with solutions that challenge the conventional narrative, making Tears of the Kingdom a captivating experience.
Conclusion
Overall, the preview experience of Tears of the Kingdom paints a picture of a game that transcends mere exploration. The combination of new abilities, tools, and the Travel Medallion gives players unparalleled freedom in how they engage with the world, turning simple tasks into grand adventures.
