Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty: Final iGV Preview

Nioh x Ninja Gaiden x Sekiro x Mario Kart!?

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty draws inspiration from a range of popular action games, creating a unique blend of combat and exploration. While the challenging combat shares similarities with the Nioh series, the game’s mobility resembles Ninja Gaiden, allowing players to traverse environments with ease. Wo Long’s verticality and stealth mechanics are reminiscent of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, providing players with strategic options for navigating and engaging with enemies. The game’s Deflect system, which requires precise timing to parry enemy attacks, echoes Sekiro’s core combat mechanic. However, Wo Long’s Deflect system is more accessible, allowing players to parry a wider range of attacks, similar to the “Jump Boost” mechanic in Mario Kart.

Weapons and Martial Arts

Wo Long offers a diverse range of 13 melee weapons, each with unique stats and Martial Arts, special moves that consume the Spirit gauge. The Martial Arts system adds depth to combat, allowing players to tailor their playstyle to suit their preferred weapons. For example, a staff with a Martial Art that allows the protagonist to jump away after attacking offers a defensive approach, while another staff might have a Martial Art that charges at the enemy with a succession of attacks, favoring aggressive play. Players can equip two melee weapons at a time and can seamlessly switch between them, utilizing the Deflect Counter Attack to parry an enemy attack while switching weapons. This mechanic adds complexity to combat and creates opportunities for dynamic combat strategies.

Who’s boss?

Wo Long features a variety of bosses, each presenting unique challenges and requiring different strategies to overcome. The game’s bosses are designed to be challenging but fair, rewarding players who master the game’s mechanics. Some bosses, like Zhang Liang, have been tweaked from the previous demo, offering a more balanced and engaging fight. While the giant ape Zhuyan is a formidable opponent at first, mastering the Deflect system allows players to quickly overcome its attacks. Aoye, a legendary Chinese creature with a horrific design, provides a memorable encounter, requiring precision and strategic timing to defeat. However, certain encounters can be made easier by summoning warlords to assist in battle, offering an alternative for players who prefer a more supportive experience.

Play it your way

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty offers a high level of customization, allowing players to personalize their experience. The robust character creator allows players to create unique avatars, while the ability to customize flags at checkpoints provides a visual expression of player individuality. The game also offers a range of settings options, allowing players to adjust various aspects of gameplay to suit their preferences. This includes features like display settings, auto lock-on, and cutscene skipping. Team Ninja has clearly paid attention to player feedback, ensuring a customizable and engaging experience. With its release on March 3, 2023, for PS5/PS4/Xbox Series X|S/Xbox One/PC, and inclusion in Xbox Game Pass, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is poised to become a significant addition to the action RPG genre.
