Ulduar Boss Guide: Part 2

Mimiron

Mimiron is an unskippable boss with a challenging hard mode. The fight takes place in four phases, each with a different vehicle. Here’s a breakdown of the key mechanics in the first phase:

  • Proximity Mines: Avoid stepping on these mines, which deal significant fire damage when triggered.
  • Shock Blast: When Mimiron casts Shock Blast, melee players must run out of range to avoid taking massive nature damage.
  • Plasma Blast: The tank will be targeted by Plasma Blast, a spell that deals consistent fire damage. Healers must spread out to prevent multiple targets from being hit by Napalm Shells.
  • Napalm Shell: This ability explodes, dealing fire damage to targets within a small radius and leaving a damaging zone on the ground.

Once Phase 1 is completed, you’ll transition to Phase 2, where you’ll fight aboard VX-001. This is a good time to use Bloodlust.

Freya

Freya is another unskippable boss with a difficult hard mode. Before engaging Freya herself, you must clear three mini-bosses:

Elder Stonebark

This mini-boss uses Ground Tremors to interrupt spellcasting and deal raid-wide damage. He also buffs himself with Stonebark, causing reflect damage on melee hits. He also enhances his melee attacks with Fist of Stone. Tank players must reposition when he casts Fist of Stone.

Elder Ironbranch

Elder Ironbranch casts Iron Roots on random players, which applies a snare and damage over time. He also impales the tank, causing massive damage. Healers should be prepared to heal the tank through this attack, and another tank should be ready to take over.

Elder Brightleaf

The last mini-boss, Elder Brightleaf, casts high-damage bolts at random players. He also places Sunbeams that damage players standing beneath them. Tanks should keep Freya moving so that she doesn’t remain under any Sunbeams.

Once you defeat all three mini-bosses, you can engage Freya.

Thorim

Thorim is an unskippable boss with an optional hard mode. The fight has two phases. The first phase involves clearing mobs in the arena area, including a giant worm that needs to be faced away from the raid. Once you clear the arena, you pull a lever to open a gate leading to a tunnel.

At this point, the raid splits into two groups. The arena group stays in the arena and deals with waves of adds. The Gauntlet group ventures through the tunnel, facing its own set of challenges.

Hodir

Hodir’s fight revolves around freeing NPCs from ice blocks, who will grant buffs to your raid. The key to beating Hodir on hard mode is to defeat him within three minutes by utilizing these buffs effectively.

Here are the key buffs you’ll need to obtain from the freed NPCs:

  • Melt Ice: This ability is cast by the freed Mages and helps free the other NPCs from their ice blocks more quickly.
  • Toasty Fire: This ability increases magical damage dealt by 2% per stack, up to 30 stacks, and removes the Biting Cold debuff.
  • Starlight: This ability is cast by the freed Druids, providing a 50% haste buff to melee players. Players need to stand in the Starlight to receive its benefit.

Hodir’s Biting Cold debuff inflicts Frost damage on stationary targets. Standing near Toasty Fire removes this debuff.

General Vezax

General Vezax has a powerful Aura of Despair, reducing mana regeneration and melee attack speed. You’ll need to overcome this aura and deal with the following abilities:

  • Searing Flames: This ability deals massive fire damage and reduces armor. It must be interrupted to prevent tank deaths.
  • Shadow Crash: Avoid the initial impact of Shadow Crash, then stand in the leftover energy field to increase magical damage dealt and reduce mana costs. This can be beneficial for DPS and Disciplined Priests.
  • Mark of the Faceless: This debuff requires the target to run away from other players as they will take damage and heal Vezax.

Yogg-Saron

Yogg-Saron is the final boss of Ulduar. He has a unique mechanic where you choose how many Keepers to activate, affecting the difficulty of the fight. Fewer Keepers activated results in more loot. The hardest version, with no Keepers activated, grants Mimiron’s Head mount to 25-man raids and the Clutches of Yogg-Saron trinket to 10-man raids.

Phase 2 of the fight features a variety of mechanics:

  • Crusher Tentacles: These tentacles are dangerous to melee players and should be focused down by ranged DPS. Paladins can use Judgment to apply the Diminish Power debuff to the tentacles.

Algalon the Observer

Algalon the Observer is a challenging encounter accessible only after completing a quest chain that involves defeating the Iron Council and the four Keepers on hard mode. After pulling Algalon for the first time in a week, a one-hour timer starts. He disappears when the timer ends, so you need to be focused and make the most of your limited attempts.

This guide provides a general overview of the bosses in Ulduar, but it’s crucial to research specific strategies and tactics for each encounter before attempting them. You’ll also need to communicate effectively with your raid group and coordinate your efforts to succeed.
