The End Of Breeding Arrives In Dofus

Announced earlier this year, the overhaul of breeding is approaching in Dofus. With quite a bit of lead time, Ankama is presenting the expected changes to gather player feedback. The modifications are massive, with some radical changes for a very niche system.

The Breeder profession appears

With this overhaul, Ankama wants to introduce a new profession to entice players: Breeder. This new profession will allow players to create the necessary breeding items to manage a mount’s mood gauges, as well as capture and breed them. Players will also need to level up this profession in order to house more mounts in a stable. But this means the profession of Handyman (Bricoleur) will lose importance and become much harder to level up.If you want to quickly enhance your character, you can always buy Dofus Kamas on iGV to purchase the required materials and speed up the process!

The future of the Handyman profession is uncertain, but the decision is left to the players. A new survey allows the community to decide what’s best for this profession. Among the options, the most interesting seems to be linking it with the profession of Craftsperson (Façonneur) to make them complement each other. However, creating a whole new profession dedicated to breeding feels like a big loss.

Thus, the “Mount Taming” spell is set to disappear. At the same time, capturing mounts is made easier with a 100% success rate, more frequent appearances of Volkornes, and simpler combat mechanics. To further facilitate breeding, wild mounts will disappear, leaving only first-generation mounts.

The end of private enclosures

With this first iteration of the overhaul, Ankama announces the intention to remove personal enclosures. These enclosures, present since the beginning of Dofus for breeding purposes, will be replaced by public enclosures. These will be located in Astrub, Amakna, Brâkmar, Bonta, Frigost, and the Breeders’ Village, but access will be granted only according to the level of the Breeder profession. Each location will also offer a unique bonus.

Astrub, Level 1: Water troughs gain X% effectiveness
Amakna, Level 40: Dragofesses gain X% effectiveness
Brâkmar, Level 80: Baffeurs gain X% effectiveness
Bonta, Level 120: Caressers gain X% effectiveness
Frigost, Level 160: Thunderers gain X% effectiveness
Breeders’ Village, Level 200: Feeders gain X% effectiveness

This decision aims to limit monopolies and regulate the black market surrounding this area. However, it also impacts other players who will be compensated for the initial cost of the enclosures they owned. This will also lead to a reduction in the stable capacity, with a maximum of 60 mounts of each type at level 200 of the profession.

The breeding items will also undergo a revamp, becoming consumables that can be activated or deactivated, affecting the entire enclosure. There is no longer any need to block mounts between 5 baffeurs to optimize gains. The interface will be simplified and more readable, showing the gauges of each item in real-time, allowing players to activate or deactivate them as needed.

All in all, the changes are quite off-putting for now. But this is only the first version, and it is expected to evolve by September.

Full overhaul for mounts

In addition to removing the concept of wild mounts, these will undergo many other changes to make this aspect of the game more accessible. The concept of inbreeding will be completely abandoned, as will the concepts of energy and fatigue. All types of mounts – Dragodindes, Muldo, and Volkornes – will now follow the same rules. Each mount can only give birth to one offspring.

The rules for creating new generations will also be revised. There will no longer be any randomness; instead, players will control the process with a fixed probability. For example, a mount at level 1 will have a 30% chance of giving birth to the next generation, while a level 200 mount will have a 90% chance. Yes, mounts can now reach level 200 to become competitive against familiars.

However, with such determinism and the addition of items that increase the probability of having a next-generation offspring or a special ability, mounts lose another advantage. Items such as characteristic scrolls, gray amber, or Volkorn horns can now be obtained in other ways. Mounts will now only be exchangeable for fertile mounts of the same generation.

An incomplete first draft

In this first draft of the breeding overhaul in Dofus, there are both good and bad ideas. While it’s quite frustrating for those who have dedicated themselves to this aspect of the game, especially on pioneering servers, making access to the next generations easier will make the profession less frustrating. However, there is a good chance that mounts already in circulation will be completely removed when the update is released.

Although the intention to limit monopolies controlled by a few players is commendable, completely removing private enclosures is a huge mistake. These enclosures are the only thing that still gives guilds any real reason to exist. Moreover, these enclosures are called “private enclosures,” but only the guild leader will receive compensation for the loss of these assets, regardless of whether they had invested in them or not.

By releasing these ideas so early, Ankama is giving the community a chance to have a say in this major overhaul, which completely redefines this aspect of the game. Opinions on these changes are as divided as they are numerous. However, it’s clear that with the removal of private enclosures, guilds will have no reason to exist.
