Helldivers 2: Sony drops PSN link requirement.

Sony Won’t Move Forward with Mandatory Account Linking

Sony, the publisher behind Helldivers 2, has reversed its decision to make linking Steam accounts to PlayStation Network (PSN) accounts mandatory. This U-turn came just days after the announcement, facing a significant backlash from the gaming community. The initial policy change, which retroactively made the linking requirement for a significant update, violated Steam’s established principles. Gamers reacted swiftly, triggering a mass review-bombing of the game’s Steam page and a wave of refunds, pushing Sony to reconsider their strategy. The company announced, via X (formerly Twitter), that the planned mandatory linking update on May 30th would not be implemented, citing player feedback as the reason. Sony expressed a commitment to understanding the needs of PC gamers and thanked them for their support.

Sony Almost Doubled Down After Delisting Helldivers 2 on Steam

The backlash extended beyond just the mandatory account linking. Sony’s decision to delist Helldivers 2 from specific Steam regions added fuel to the fire. This move, directly tied to the account linking requirement, further inflamed gamer frustration. While Sony has now withdrawn the mandatory linking requirement, the game remains unavailable on Steam for certain regions. Players who purchased the game before the delisting still have access to it through their Steam libraries, but the future availability and re-listing of Helldivers 2 on Steam are uncertain.

Why Did Sony Want Account Linking?

Sony’s initial rationale for the mandatory Steam-PSN account linking was centered around enhanced moderation and player management. The ability to tie Steam accounts to PSN accounts would offer improved tools for identifying and banning disruptive players. This control, however, could also imply a desire for additional player data. Linking accounts grants access to more information than Sony initially had. This information, while potentially valuable for strategic game development and marketing initiatives, raised concerns about data privacy among players.

Massive Backlash for Helldivers 2

The gaming community responded quickly and forcefully to Sony’s mandatory linking policy change for Helldivers 2. The community’s reaction was immediate, widespread, and highly critical. Within days of the announcement, the game’s Steam reviews plummeted to “Mostly Negative,” reflecting the strong disapproval. Gamers actively sought refunds, citing their disagreement with the new policy and, in some cases, the unavailability of PSN in their region. This significant player feedback appeared to be a key factor in Sony’s decision to reverse the mandatory linking requirement. The ease with which Steam processed refunds also likely played a role, as Sony may have faced the potential loss of significant revenue due to the policy shift.
