What promise was broken?
The predecessor of the popular Path of Exile 2 once led the developers of Grinding Gear Games to success. With the development of Part 2, an independent, original game was to be created, which has its own focus and community. Meanwhile, the development of Path of Exile should not stop.
But that’s exactly what happened recently when boss Jonathan Rogers pulled the experienced developers away from PoE to speed up the development of the second part. In doing so, he broke a promise for which he later publicly apologized.
To make amends, the developers launched the “Legacy of Phrecia” event league, which allowed players to play discarded ideas from the developers. But the event ended on April 23 after an extension. It was replaced by small events on private servers. The reaction of gamers to the slump is now reflected in the number of players.

Path of Exile currently only reaches a total of 8,720 players at a time at peak times on weekends, and the trend is falling (via SteamDB). The last time the ARPG recorded such low player numbers was in August 2016, about 9 years ago. By comparison, the last league launch of Path of Exile was played by almost 230,000 gamers at the same time.
Why so few fans are playing Path of Exile right now can be answered by taking a look at the game’s Reddit forum. Users there explain that they have lost their interest in the game due to the lack of content. Some even talk on Reddit about the fact that their addiction to Path of Exile has come to an end.
What does the future look like?
The developers have already announced that the next league for Path of Exile will start in June (via PathofExile.com). However, it is not yet known what content fans can expect. A new league usually brings its own mechanic that changes the game. There are also changes to balance as well as improvements to various aspects of the game. Players should also expect new items and abilities.
It is still unclear whether the developers will be able to keep the targeted launch date in June or whether there will be a postponement. The last confirmation of the start of the league in June was at the end of April. While fans are waiting for a new league in Path of Exile, a player was disappointed twice after a long wait.
