Path of Exile: Scourge Item Tier Upgrade Guide

Upgrading Items to Scourge Tiers in Path of Exile Guide

Path of Exile’s Scourge League, introduced in patch 3.16, brought a unique and risky item-crafting mechanic to the forefront. This guide will walk you through the process of imbuing your gear with powerful, yet potentially detrimental, Scourge modifiers, explaining each tier of transformation.

Scourge League: Blood Crucible Guide

The Scourge League, launched in October 2021, introduced the innovative Blood Crucible mechanic, allowing exiles to corrupt items in a new and exciting way. This system involves a dangerous journey into an alternate dimension where items absorb corruption from slain monsters. To begin, you simply place any weapon, armor piece, or jewelry into the Blood Crucible. As you defeat foes in Wraeclast, the crucible fills with their blood, displayed by a progress bar on your screen. Once partially filled, you can press the ‘V’ key (by default) to shift into the chaotic Apocalyptic Wraeclast, a hellish mirror world. Here, you’ll face terrifying demons, and more importantly, gather the remaining blood needed to fully empower your item. Fully filling the crucible ensures maximum corruption absorption during your time in this perilous realm, as it acts like a timer.

Interacting with the Blood Crucible is straightforward. You can open its panel by pressing the backtick (`) key, or by accessing your inventory (‘I’) and clicking the “Open Blood Crucible” button near your character’s glove slot. The interface presents two primary tabs: Crucible and Skills. On the Crucible tab, you’ll see a slot to place an item, preparing it for transformation. The Skills tab, conversely, offers a passive tree-like system. As you fight within the alternate dimension, you earn skill points which can be allocated here. These skills enhance your corruption process, for example, by increasing the amount of corruption absorbed by specific item types like jewelry or armor. There’s even a crucial skill that unlocks the ability to corrupt unique items, though it requires ten prior skill points in the tree. Exploring these options can significantly tailor your corruption strategy.

Unique items in PoE 3.16 Scourge

The essence of Scourge item upgrading lies in the new implicit modifiers it bestows upon your gear. When you successfully scourge an item, it gains these special properties. For most items, this means acquiring two new implicit stats: one beneficial (positive) and one detrimental (negative). However, unique items stand apart, receiving four implicit Scourge mods – two positive and two negative, significantly raising both the potential reward and risk. The process begins with an item placed in the Blood Crucible. As you eliminate monsters in the Apocalyptic Event Realm, the item inside gradually absorbs corruption. You can monitor its progress by simply hovering over the item in the Crucible panel.

Once the item has absorbed sufficient corruption, the “Transform” button becomes active. Clicking this button initiates the scourging process, permanently altering the item and marking it as ‘Corrupted’. This initial transformation results in a Scourge Tier 1 item, which has no specific item level requirement to achieve. The new implicit modifiers are entirely random. For instance, you might see a beneficial stat like “+30 to Evasion Rating” coupled with a detrimental one such as “-15% to Chaos Resistance”. Alternatively, a weapon could gain “+20% to Global Critical Strike Multiplier” but also “-10% Attack Speed”. This unpredictable nature is central to the Scourge experience. While the initial scourging is always possible, subsequent transformations depend on the item’s inherent level, opening the door for further, more powerful tiers.

How to Re-Roll an item to Scourge Tier 2

If your initial Scourge Tier 1 transformation didn’t yield the desired implicit modifiers, there’s good news: you can attempt to re-roll them by pushing your item to Scourge Tier 2. This advanced transformation, however, comes with a prerequisite: the item must have an item level of 45 or higher. Items below this threshold are permanently locked at Tier 1, making careful selection of base items crucial for deeper corruption attempts. If your item meets the item level requirement, you simply place the already scourged Tier 1 item back into the Blood Crucible. You then repeat the familiar process of filling the Crucible with blood by slaying monsters in both standard Wraeclast and its apocalyptic counterpart.

Once the item has absorbed enough corruption for a second time, you can click the “Transform” button again. This action will convert your item into a Scourge Tier 2 item, completely replacing its previous implicit modifiers with a brand new set. These new implicit stats will still follow the same pattern: one beneficial and one detrimental for most items, or two of each for unique items. This secondary transformation offers another chance to hit those highly sought-after, powerful modifiers, but it also carries the inherent risk of rolling even worse negative effects. The gamble continues, as each re-roll is an opportunity for significant upgrade or a potential setback. Should Tier 2 still not be satisfactory, a final, even higher-stakes transformation awaits.

How to Re-Roll an Item to Scourge Tier 3

For exiles seeking the ultimate Scourge modification, the journey culminates in Scourge Tier 3. This final, most potent transformation offers one last opportunity to obtain truly game-changing implicit modifiers, but it demands an even higher item level: only items with an item level of 68 or above can reach Scourge Tier 3. To achieve this, you take your already Scourge Tier 2 item, place it back into the Blood Crucible, and once again embark on the grim task of filling the crucible by vanquishing the demonic hordes of Apocalyptic Wraeclast. As with previous tiers, monitoring the corruption absorbed and then clicking ‘Transform’ will complete the process.

Upon reaching Tier 3, your item will be bestowed with a third and final set of Scourge implicit modifiers, replacing any previously acquired ones. This is the absolute pinnacle of Scourge item corruption; once an item is Tier 3 scourged, no further transformations are possible, regardless of its item level or any future game mechanics. The resulting implicit modifiers are permanent. Alongside the Scourge league, a new family of Tainted Currency orbs was introduced, specifically designed to modify corrupted items – a direct consequence of the Scourge mechanic. These include items like the Tainted Chromatic Orb, Tainted Orb of Fusing, Tainted Jeweller’s Orb, Tainted Chaos Orb, and Tainted Exalted Orb, among others. These specialized currencies provide avenues to further refine your scourged gear, allowing for adjustments to sockets, links, or even explicit modifiers, adding another layer of depth to item customization within the corrupted ecosystem of Path of Exile.
