PoE 3.21: Oni-Goroshi Tectonic Slam Chieftain

Welcome, exiles! Today, we’re diving into an exciting and powerful Path of Exile build for version 3.21: the Oni-Goroshi Tectonic Slam Chieftain. This build leverages the unique properties of the legendary sword Oni-Goroshi to deliver devastating fire damage, combined with the survivability and elemental synergy of the Chieftain ascendancy. Prepare to burn your enemies to ash as we explore the essential components of this robust melee character.

Equipment

Budge

This particular build isn’t designed for a shoestring budget. While achievable, players should anticipate investing around 500 Chaos Orbs to secure the core unique items and adequately rolled rare pieces. The cost can fluctuate based on market demand and specific roll preferences, but it represents a solid mid-tier investment for a strong character capable of handling a wide range of content.

Items Mods

When gearing your Oni-Goroshi Tectonic Slam Chieftain, prioritize offensive and defensive modifiers to maximize your potential.

  • Offensive Mods: Physical Damage, Melee Damage, Area Damage, Fire Damage, Attack Speed, Critical Strike Multiplier, Accuracy Rating.
  • Defensive Mods: Armour, Maximum Life, Elemental Resistances (especially Fire), Intelligence (for gem requirements).

Balancing these attributes ensures both significant damage output and resilience in challenging encounters.

Mandatory Unique

Oni-Goroshi: This unique sword is the undisputed cornerstone of the build. It grants the “Her Embrace” buff upon igniting an enemy, converting a significant portion of physical damage to extra fire damage and boosting attack/movement speed. Additionally, it provides immunity to elemental ailments like stun and freeze, along with a substantial increase to critical strike chance. However, Her Embrace applies degen fire damage based on your level, requiring careful mitigation through high fire resistance and life regeneration.

Yoke of Suffering: This amulet is crucial for enhancing your damage. It ensures all your damage can Shock, enabling consistent application of a potent debuff on bosses, increasing their damage taken. The Yoke also provides an additional damage multiplier for each different ailment you inflict, synergizing perfectly with the build’s fire and shock capabilities.

Abyssus: An excellent helmet for offensive power, Abyssus provides a large flat physical damage bonus to attacks and a considerable boost to critical strike multiplier. While it also increases physical damage taken, this drawback is offset by the build’s inherent defenses like high armour, permanent Fortify, and numerous Endurance Charges, allowing you to maximize your offense without becoming overly fragile.

Rare Helmet

Should you choose an alternative to Abyssus, a well-rolled rare Royal Burgonet or Eternal Burgonet is ideal. Look for high rolls of Armour, maximum Life, and robust Elemental Resistances to shore up your defenses. An exceptional choice would be one with an explicit modifier like “Nearby Enemies have -9% to Fire Resistance,” greatly amplifying your fire damage against tough foes.

Rare Gloves

For your gloves, Stealth Gloves provide a good balance of evasion and implicit attack speed. Prioritize a high Life roll (70+), cap your Elemental Resistances, and secure a significant amount of Accuracy Rating (at least 400). Attack speed is also a valuable mod to look for, improving both damage and the rate at which you generate Tectonic Slam’s fissures.

Rare Body Armour

A custom-crafted Full Dragonscale or similar hybrid Armour/Evasion base is recommended. Seek out strong modifiers for Armour and Evasion, along with a high percentage chance to Suppress Spell Damage for crucial spell defense. Additionally, ensure it provides a substantial boost to maximum Life and helps cap any remaining Elemental Resistances.

Beyond the mandatory items, these uniques offer excellent synergy and power for the build:

  • Cherrubim’s Maleficence: Provides global physical damage as extra chaos damage and life/mana gain on kill.
  • Atziri’s Step: Offers Evasion, Life, and Spell Dodge, enhancing overall survivability.
  • The Taming: Grants significant fire damage and critical strike chance/multiplier if you can stack various ignites.

Flasks provide vital bursts of defense, offense, and utility:

  • Divine Life Flask: For emergency life recovery.
  • Quicksilver Flask: Essential for movement speed and navigating maps quickly.
  • Granite Flask: Provides a substantial boost to physical damage reduction.
  • Diamond Flask: Increases your critical strike chance dramatically.
  • The Wise Oak: Balances elemental resistances and grants elemental penetration.
  • Cinderswallow Urn: Offers various benefits on kill, including life/mana recovery and offensive buffs.

Gems

Strategic gem linking is paramount for maximizing the effectiveness of your Oni-Goroshi Tectonic Slam Chieftain. Focus on enhancing your main attack, supporting auras, and utility skills.

Sword

  • Tectonic Slam (Main Skill)
  • Elemental Damage with Attacks Support
  • Pulverise Support
  • Inspiration Support
  • Multistrike Support
  • Fire Penetration Support

This 6-link setup ensures Tectonic Slam hits hard, scales with your elemental damage, and benefits from rapid attacks and critical strikes, incinerating enemies efficiently.

Armour

  • Enduring Cry
  • Molten Shell
  • Increased Duration Support
  • Berserk
  • Leap Slam
  • Summon Ice Golem

This combination provides instant recovery, defensive layers, a powerful damage boost, and mobility. Enduring Cry generates Endurance Charges, Molten Shell absorbs damage, and Berserk offers a temporary surge of offense. Leap Slam is your primary movement skill.

Helmet

  • Vaal Ancestral Warchief
  • Ancestral Protector
  • Multiple Totems Support
  • Blood Rage

Totems provide a significant damage boost to you and nearby allies, especially during boss fights. Vaal Ancestral Warchief offers an additional burst of damage. Blood Rage grants invaluable attack speed and life leech.

Gloves

  • Anger
  • Herald of Ash
  • Grace
  • Enlighten Support

These are your essential offensive and defensive auras. Anger and Herald of Ash massively boost your fire damage, while Grace significantly increases your evasion rating. Enlighten Support reduces the mana reservation of linked skills, allowing you to run more auras.

Boots

  • Arcanist Brand (Level 1)
  • Wave of Conviction (Level 1)
  • Assassin’s Mark
  • Combustion Support

This setup is dedicated to utility and debuffing enemies. Arcanist Brand automatically casts Wave of Conviction, which reduces enemy fire resistance, and applies Assassin’s Mark for critical strike benefits. Combustion Support ensures enemies become more vulnerable to your fire damage.

Jewels

Jewels are powerful customization tools, allowing you to fine-tune your stats and push your build’s potential even further. Prioritize these modifiers on your rare jewels:

Jewels Mods

  • Increased Physical Damage
  • Increased Melee Damage
  • Increased Area Damage
  • Increased Fire Damage
  • Increased Sword Damage
  • Increased Attack Speed
  • Global Critical Strike Multiplier
  • Increased Maximum Life

Aim for jewels that provide a strong combination of these offensive and defensive attributes to significantly boost your character’s overall performance.

Unique Jewel

Thread of Hope: This unique jewel is incredibly useful, especially a large or very large radius variant. It allows you to allocate passive skills within its radius without connecting them to your main tree, enabling access to highly efficient nodes that would otherwise be out of reach. While not strictly mandatory, it offers substantial passive point optimization.

Watcher’s Eye: A high-end Prismatic Jewel, a Watcher’s Eye can offer immense power. Specifically, look for the modifier “Gain X% of Physical Damage as Extra Fire Damage while affected by Anger.” This synergizes perfectly with the build’s fire damage focus and the Anger aura you’ll be running.

Skill Tree

Your passive skill tree focuses on a balance of offense and defense, prioritizing melee damage, fire damage, life, and crucial defensive mechanics like Endurance Charges and Fortify. Key clusters to target include those providing increased physical and fire damage, critical strike chance and multiplier, life, armour, and resistance nodes. Pathing efficiently towards these nodes while ensuring enough Strength and Dexterity for gear and gems is essential. The tree will naturally gravitate towards the Marauder and Duelist starting areas, extending into the Templar and Warrior sections for vital stat and defensive nodes.

Ascendancy

As a Chieftain, your Ascendancy points will greatly enhance your fire damage, survivability, and utility. The recommended order for ascending is generally:

  1. Tasurong, Hinekora’s Hand: Provides maximum Endurance Charges and physical damage reduction.
  2. Ngamahu, Flame’s Advance: Offers significant fire penetration and fire damage conversion.
  3. Arohongui, Moon’s Presence: Boosts life regeneration and further enhances fire damage.
  4. Hinekoras, Death’s Fury: Grants a powerful damage multiplier against ignited enemies and totem placement speed.

This progression secures crucial defensive layers early while scaling your offensive capabilities with powerful fire damage and conversion bonuses.

Pantheon

Choosing the right Pantheon powers provides essential passive defenses and utility for various situations.

  • Major God: Soul of Arakaali is highly recommended. Its “50% increased Recovery of Life and Energy Shield if you’ve stopped taking Damage Over Time Recently” is fantastic for mitigating Oni-Goroshi’s self-inflicted fire degen. The upgrades, particularly “25% reduced Chaos Damage taken from Damage Over Time,” further bolster your defenses.
  • Minor God: Soul of Tukohama is an excellent choice for melee builds. It provides “2% additional Physical Damage Reduction per second you’ve been Stationary, up to a maximum of 8%” and “While Stationary, gain 0.5% of Life Regenerated per second.” This helps sustain your health during prolonged engagements.

Bandits

For the “Deal With the Bandits” quest in Act 2, the optimal choice for this Oni-Goroshi Tectonic Slam Chieftain build is to kill all bandits.

  • Killing all bandits grants you 2 passive points for your skill tree. These two points are invaluable for reaching critical nodes, improving your damage, or bolstering your defenses more effectively than any specific bandit reward.

If you accidentally sided with a bandit, you can rectify this by selling 20 Orbs of Regret and one Onyx Amulet to any vendor to receive the “Reward all” option.

Leveling

Leveling this build is a smooth process if you follow a strategic progression of skills and gear. Focusing on fast-clearing melee skills early on will make your journey through the acts enjoyable and efficient.

Tips

Start with Frost Blades for its excellent early game clear. Transition to Tectonic Slam once you acquire Oni-Goroshi and have enough support gems. Keep your elemental resistances capped and upgrade your weapons frequently. Focus on Life nodes on your passive tree to ensure survivability from the start. Remember to activate your auras as soon as you have the mana reservation available.
