OW2 Invasion: Story Missions, Illari & Season Info

Overwatch 2: Invasion marks a significant update for the game, bringing a wealth of new content across all platforms, including its debut on Steam. This major seasonal launch introduces an exciting new support hero, captivating story missions, a dynamic new game mode, and a variety of comprehensive gameplay enhancements. From expanding the lore to refining the competitive experience, Invasion aims to refresh and deepen the Overwatch 2 universe for all players. Here’s an in-depth look at everything included in this extensive update.

New Support Hero: Illari

The latest addition to the Overwatch 2 roster is Illari, a formidable support hero hailing from Peru, whose abilities are deeply intertwined with the power of the sun. As the tenth support character, Illari brings a unique blend of offensive pressure and sustained healing to her team, making her a versatile choice in various compositions. Her kit is designed for players who enjoy contributing damage while maintaining strong support for their allies.

  • Solar Rifle (Primary Fire): Illari wields a long-range rifle that charges automatically. This weapon delivers potent solar-powered projectiles, allowing her to engage enemies from a distance.
  • Healing Beam (Secondary Fire): Complementing her offensive capabilities, Illari can channel a medium-range healing beam. This ability consumes solar energy, requiring careful resource management to maximize its effectiveness in critical moments.
  • Healing Pylon (Tactical Ability): A cornerstone of her support, Illari can deploy a pylon that automatically heals nearby allies. This stationary device provides consistent area-of-effect healing until it is destroyed by enemy fire, offering strategic placement opportunities.
  • Outburst (Movement Ability): Illari’s mobility skill allows her to launch herself in her current direction, simultaneously knocking back foes in her path. Holding this ability grants her a higher jump, enabling both quick escapes and aggressive pushes.
  • Captive Sun (Ultimate Ability): Her ultimate unleashes a powerful solar energy fireball. Foes struck by this projectile are slowed and become “Captivated,” leading to a devastating explosion if they take significant damage shortly after.

Illari’s design encourages a proactive support playstyle, rewarding accuracy and smart positioning to harness her solar abilities for both damage and vital team sustain.

Story Missions

Overwatch 2: Invasion finally delivers on the promise of cooperative story-driven missions, pushing the narrative forward after Winston’s global recall of heroes. These missions take place across three distinct locations: the vibrant streets of Rio de Janeiro, the bustling urban landscape of Toronto, and the industrial heart of Gothenburg. Players are tasked with confronting Null Sector, the rogue Omnic faction that initiated a planetary invasion, providing a direct continuation of the overarching Overwatch lore.

Chronologically, these events unfold as the world scrambles to react to Null Sector’s global assault, bridging the gap between familiar cinematics and new developments. Heroes, some meeting for the first time, must band together to push back the omnic threat. Each mission offers a robust cooperative experience, designed to take roughly thirty to forty minutes to complete, depending on the chosen difficulty and team cohesion. Enhancements have been made since the early BlizzCon demonstrations, including the introduction of hero selection options, allowing players more agency in team composition, and refined AI for bot-controlled teammates, ensuring a smoother experience even with incomplete player teams.

Access to these crucial narrative experiences requires the purchase of the Overwatch 2: Invasion Bundle for $15. This bundle not only grants permanent access to the story missions but also includes 1000 Overwatch Coins (sufficient for a Premium Battle Pass), a new Legendary skin for Sojourn, and permanent unlock for Sojourn as a playable hero for new players upon completing specific story mission challenges.

New Limited Time Event: King’s Row – Underworld

Alongside the main story missions, Overwatch 2: Invasion introduces a brand-new, free-to-play cooperative event titled “King’s Row – Underworld.” This limited-time experience takes players to the iconic King’s Row map, but with a unique twist: they must venture into the shadowy Omnic Underworld, a territory increasingly threatened by Null Sector’s relentless expansion. The primary objective is to reactivate a specialized combat bot, crucial for assisting the Omnic population in escaping Null Sector’s grasp.

This event offers a fresh challenge, featuring more formidable Null Sector adversaries and introducing a new support bot that heals the formidable OR-14 attack bot serving as a mini-boss. The dynamic nature of Underworld is further enhanced by the introduction of new challenges throughout its availability. Players will need to adapt their strategies to overcome these escalating difficulties and ensure the success of their rescue mission. The King’s Row – Underworld event is available for a limited period, running from August 10th to September 5th, offering a valuable opportunity for all players to engage with new PvE content and explore a different side of King’s Row without any purchase requirement.

New Game Mode: Flashpoint

Overwatch 2: Invasion expands its core gameplay with the introduction of Flashpoint, an exciting new game mode available in both Quick Play and Competitive queues. This mode pits two teams of five against each other in a race to secure dynamic, rotating capture points, known as “Flashpoints.” The objective is straightforward: be the first team to successfully capture three Flashpoints to claim victory. Each map features five distinct Flashpoint locations, which activate randomly throughout the match, demanding constant adaptation and strategic movement from both teams.

Flashpoint launches with two brand-new maps specifically designed for this mode: the sprawling metropolitan area of Suravasa and the chaotic industrial zone of New Junk City. Matches in Flashpoint are designed to be faster-paced than the traditional Control mode, primarily due to the significantly quicker capture speed. A Flashpoint can be secured in 70 seconds, a marked reduction from Control’s 120-second capture time. This acceleration ensures that engagements are frequent and momentum shifts rapidly, leading to intense and thrilling matches typically lasting between 8 to 15 minutes. Flashpoint will initially debut in Quick Play, allowing for player feedback and balance adjustments before making its way into the competitive rankings a few weeks after its launch.

Gameplay Changes

Beyond new heroes and modes, Overwatch 2: Invasion brings several significant gameplay enhancements aimed at improving player experience, practice, and progression. A major addition is the upcoming **Hero Mastery** mode, a free feature that offers specialized training courses tailored to individual heroes. These courses are designed to test and refine player skills with specific characters, complete with global leaderboards for those who wish to compete for the highest scores. Hero Mastery will roll out later in the season, providing a dedicated space for skill development.

Currently available is a revamped **Practice Range**, which boasts an updated layout and more dynamic features. Players can now test their aiming and abilities against a variety of new bot types, including shielded bots, and customize bot settings to create ideal training scenarios. This improved range offers a much more effective warm-up and practice environment.

Furthermore, a comprehensive **Hero Progression System** has been introduced. This system meticulously tracks a player’s performance with each individual hero across various categories such as damage dealt, damage mitigated, and healing provided. As players accumulate experience with a hero, they level up and earn unique emblems, providing a visual representation of their dedication and skill. This progression is proudly displayed on the player’s profile, offering a new layer of recognition for mastery. To support this, a new Weekly Challenge, “Making Progress,” rewards players with Progression Levels instead of Battle Pass XP, alongside 150 Overwatch Credits for purchasing items from the Hero Gallery. These changes collectively offer richer ways to engage with and grow within Overwatch 2.
