The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria Review
The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria takes place during the Fourth Age of Middle-earth, after the defeat of Sauron and the conclusion of the War of the Ring. This era has not been explored much in Tolkien’s works, making it an interesting choice for the game’s setting.
The story sees Gimli, voiced by John Rhys-Davies, summoning dwarves from all factions to reclaim Moria from the goblins and orcs. As one of these dwarves, players embark on a perilous journey into the heart of the lost kingdom.

Return to Moria’s central gameplay loop is familiar to survival game veterans. Players will explore the dangerous depths of Moria, gathering resources to build their base, craft better equipment, and confront increasingly powerful enemies. This loop is enjoyable and addictive, but it lacks the originality found in other survival games.
Despite its strengths, Return to Moria falls short in certain areas. The building system feels restrictive, with preset campsites encouraging players to follow a specific path. The combat is repetitive and uninspired, with enemies lacking intelligence and variety.
Performance issues also plague the game, ranging from minor bugs to game-breaking glitches. Framerates can drop, loading times can be lengthy, and some areas fail to load properly, exposing developer assets.

Despite its shortcomings, Return to Moria shines when played with friends. The chaotic nature of multiple players exploring and fighting together adds to the excitement. It’s especially helpful in large combat encounters, where teamwork can overcome the game’s weak enemy AI.
Overall, Return to Moria is a decent survival game with a strong Lord of the Rings theme. However, it fails to innovate on the genre and suffers from performance issues. While the game’s core loop can be entertaining, its flaws prevent it from reaching its full potential. If you’re a fan of the Lord of the Rings and are looking for a survival game to play with friends, Return to Moria might be worth a look. However, if you’re seeking a truly groundbreaking or polished experience, you might be better off exploring other options.
