What are Engravings?
Engravings in Lost Ark provide a customization layer, allowing players to fine-tune their characters with specific buffs and benefits. These bonuses can significantly enhance your character’s combat prowess and utility, especially when tackling challenging content. Think of them as specialized perks that synergize with your class and preferred playstyle.
There are primarily three types of Engravings: General, Class-Specific, and Negative. General Engravings offer broad improvements applicable to any class. Class-Specific Engravings, as the name suggests, are tailored for individual classes. Negative Engravings, on the other hand, provide a penalty in exchange for gaining benefits from higher-level Engravings. Understanding these distinctions is crucial for optimizing your character build.
How Do You Get Engravings?
Activating Engravings involves accumulating “nodes” to reach specific levels. Each Engraving has three levels, each requiring five nodes for activation. Once activated, these levels provide scaled bonuses to your character. However, Negative Engravings activate as soon as even a single node is acquired, so careful consideration is needed.
You can acquire Engravings through several sources, including:
- Accessories: Provide a limited number of nodes for specific Engravings.
- Ability Stones: Can grant a substantial amount of nodes but often come with Negative Engraving nodes.
- Engraving Recipes: Consumed to permanently increase the number of nodes available for a specific Engraving. These can be obtained from quests, daily rewards, and island quests.
Players can equip two Engravings at a time. A common strategy is to use one slot for a general Engraving and the other for a class-specific Engraving to enhance performance.
List of General and Negative Engravings
The table shows a selection of general engravings and their effects per level:
| Engraving Name | Level 1 | Level 2 | Level 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grudge | 4% dmg to bosses, +20% dmg taken | 10% dmg to bosses, +20% dmg taken | 20% dmg to bosses, +20% dmg taken |
| Keen Blunt Weapon | +10% Crit Damage, -20% dmg on normal attacks | +25% Crit Damage, -20% dmg on normal attacks | +50% Crit Damage, -20% dmg on normal attacks |
Negative engravings apply negative effects, for example:

|---|---|---|---|
| Attack Power Decrease | -2% Attack Power | -4% Attack Power | -6% Attack Power |
Best General Engravings for End-Game Content:
Here are some of the most potent general engravings for end-game activities:
- Grudge: Significantly boosts damage against bosses, but increases damage received. Only use it if you’re confident in your ability to avoid damage.
- Cursed Doll: Increases attack power but reduces healing received. A risk/reward option for players comfortable with their survivability.
- Keen Blunt Weapon: Substantially increases critical damage but reduces the damage of regular attacks. Highly effective for builds focused on critical hits.
- Master of Ambush: Increases damage dealt with back attacks. Essential for classes that can reliably position themselves behind enemies.
These engravings are considered core for many end-game builds due to their significant damage output potential. Always consider your character’s build and playstyle when selecting engravings.
Other General Engravings
Besides the top-tier engravings, several other options can be valuable, depending on your class and playstyle:
- Spirit Absorption: Increases attack speed and movement speed, providing a noticeable boost to fluidity.
- Raid Captain: Increases outgoing damage based on your movement speed bonus. Requires a build that incorporates movement speed buffs.
- Adrenaline: Grants stacking attack power and critical hit chance after using skills. Ideal for classes that constantly cycle through their abilities.
These engravings offer utility and damage enhancements that can be tailored to specific needs. Don’t underestimate their potential to improve your character’s performance.
Consider experimenting with different combinations to find what works best for you. What one player may find essential, another may deem less useful. Consider looking at class-specific guides to find out if there are combinations that excel more than others.
Negative Engravings
Negative Engravings, such as Attack Power Decrease, Defense Decrease, and Speed Decrease, provide detrimental effects. They should be avoided whenever possible, as they can significantly hinder your character’s performance.
While they are sometimes unavoidable when optimizing ability stones or accessories, strive to minimize their impact by preventing them from reaching higher levels. A Level 1 negative engraving is better than Level 3 one.
Always prioritize minimizing negative engravings while maximizing the beneficial ones. Striking the right balance is key to creating a powerful and effective character in Lost Ark.
