Dota 2: Beginner's Guide

Getting To Know Dota 2

Defense of the Ancients 2, commonly known as Dota 2, is a complex and diverse multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game. It’s a classic MOBA, known for its depth and strategic gameplay. The game involves two teams of five players, each trying to destroy the other’s Ancient, a powerful structure located at the heart of their base. Dota 2 features a rich roster of unique heroes, each with distinct abilities and playstyles, contributing to its diverse gameplay.

The game is split into two teams: the Dire and the Radiant. The Dire team occupies the darker half of the map, while the Radiant team occupies the brighter half. The visual differences between the teams are reflected in their Ancients and their overall aesthetics. Despite these visual differences, the gameplay remains balanced between both sides.

Dota 2 Map Lanes

Dota 2’s map is divided into three lanes: the off lane, the mid lane, and the safe lane. Each lane is strategically important, and choosing the right hero for each lane is a crucial aspect of the game. The off lane is located on the left side of your spawn area, and it’s considered the hardest lane due to its proximity to the enemy’s base and its distance from your own. The safe lane is located on the right side of your spawn area, offering a safer environment thanks to its proximity to your own creeps and distance from the enemy base. The mid lane, directly across from the spawn area, provides a fast-paced and competitive environment for skilled players.

Off Lane

The off lane is a challenging lane for both experienced and new players. Its proximity to the enemy’s base makes it easy for enemy heroes to harass you and your allies. The off lane is typically chosen by heroes who are capable of surviving these early game pressures and potentially ganking other lanes. These heroes usually have high sustain or are strong in one-on-one fights.

Safe Lane

The safe lane is often the preferred choice for heroes who need to farm safely and effectively in the early game. It’s a less risky environment compared to the off lane, allowing heroes to gain levels and items without constant harassment. The safe lane heroes typically excel at ranged attacks, allowing them to farm safely while still providing some level of support to their allies.

What are Dota 2 Runes?

Dota 2’s unique rune system allows players to temporarily enhance their heroes’ abilities. These runes are located at specific points on the map and spawn at predetermined times. Unlike some other MOBAs, Dota 2 is not a “pay-to-win” game, relying instead on strategic decision-making and skill to achieve victory. Runes are a key element in the game, providing crucial temporary buffs to players who can acquire them.

Bounty Runes

Bounty runes are located in the jungles of both teams. They spawn every three minutes, offering a quick burst of gold to the player who collects them. The value of bounty runes increases as the game progresses, becoming a more valuable resource later in the game. Players will often compete for these runes, especially in the early game when gold is scarce.

Power-up Runes

Power-up runes are located along the river, a central area of the map where both teams can potentially claim them. Unlike bounty runes, these runes offer a variety of temporary enhancements, providing a strategic edge in team fights or lane dominance. The power-up runes have different effects: Double Damage, Haste, Illusion, Regeneration, Invisibility, and Arcane. Each rune offers unique advantages, making it important for players to use them strategically.

  • Double Damage Rune: This rune increases base damage for a short period, making your attacks more powerful. It’s a valuable rune for heroes that rely on their base damage, such as carries and melee heroes.
  • Haste Rune: This rune increases movement speed to maximum and provides immunity to slow effects. This rune is excellent for chasing down enemies, escaping dangerous situations, or quickly rotating to other lanes.
  • Illusion Rune: This rune creates controllable illusions of your hero, offering a temporary boost to your team’s numbers. It’s useful for pushing lanes, distracting the enemy, or creating chaos in team fights.
  • Regeneration Rune: This rune provides a temporary increase in health and mana regeneration. It’s excellent for sustaining yourself in long fights or for recovering quickly after a skirmish.
  • Invisibility Rune: This rune makes your hero invisible for a short time, allowing you to sneak into enemy territory, ambush opponents, or safely farm in dangerous areas.
  • Arcane Rune: This rune reduces the cooldown of all your spells and items. It’s particularly helpful for heroes with powerful abilities that have long cooldowns, allowing you to use them more frequently.

Water Rune

The water rune is a simpler rune compared to the others. It provides a small but immediate boost to health and mana, useful for recovering quickly after a fight or for gaining a slight edge in the early game. The water rune is usually taken as a quick pick-up if it spawns nearby, offering a small benefit without requiring strategic positioning.
