What Do Tanks do in Final Fantasy XIV?
In Final Fantasy XIV, tanks are the frontline defenders, responsible for drawing enemy aggro and mitigating damage. They act as the shield for the party, allowing the damage dealers (DPS) and healers to perform their roles effectively. This involves strategically using abilities to soak up attacks, employing crowd control to manage multiple enemies, and utilizing defensive buffs and self-healing to stay alive. While all tanks share this core function, some excel more in damage mitigation, while others lean towards damage output or utility. This creates a dynamic where the “main tank” absorbs the majority of damage, while an “off-tank” might provide additional support and control, sometimes contributing significant damage as well.
FFXIV 14 Tanks Tier List
This tier list reflects the current meta and general consensus among players. It’s important to remember that player skill and party composition significantly influence performance. These rankings are a guideline, not an absolute truth.
Warrior – S-Tier
The Warrior reigns supreme as the S-tier tank. Its exceptional self-healing and mitigation capabilities, combined with solid damage output, make it a consistently reliable choice for high-end content. Warriors boast a relatively straightforward rotation, making them accessible to players of varying skill levels while still providing top-tier performance. Their versatility in both damage and survival makes them a strong contender in almost any situation.
Gunbreaker – A-Tier
Gunbreakers occupy the A-tier, excelling in damage output among tanks. They bring significant DPS to the table, making them highly valuable in speed runs and situations where raw damage is prioritized. However, Gunbreaker’s high skill ceiling makes them more challenging to master. The complex rotation demands precise timing and understanding of the class mechanics to optimize performance. Mastering the Gunbreaker unlocks immense potential, but the learning curve can be steep.
Dark Knight – A-Tier
Dark Knights also reside in the A-tier, offering a potent blend of damage and survivability. Their dark magic abilities add another layer of complexity and strategic depth to their gameplay. While they possess strong defensive options, their self-sustain is less robust than the Warrior’s. This means that Dark Knights require more careful management of their resources and a stronger understanding of defensive cooldowns.
Paladin – B-Tier
Paladins round out the list in the B-tier. They are the quintessential stalwart defenders, with an emphasis on mitigation and party support through powerful defensive buffs and heals. However, their damage output lags behind other tanks, making them less desirable in situations where speed and raw DPS are critical. Paladins excel at ensuring party survival but may not contribute as significantly to overall damage throughput. Their role focuses heavily on support and defense, prioritizing the safety of the party above all else.
