FF16 News from Sony State of Play

The Epic Battles of Eikons and Clive Rosfield

The State of Play provided an extensive look into Final Fantasy 16’s combat system, showcasing the captivating clashes between Eikons, also known as Summons from previous installments. Players will engage in battles featuring familiar Eikons like Ifrit, Shiva, Ramuh, Titan, Bahamut, Phoenix, Garuda, and more. These confrontations introduce a dynamic shift to the gameplay, transforming the battles into unique experiences that range from “3D scrolling shooters” to intense “heavyweight wrestling matches”.

The scale of these battles is a spectacle in itself, eclipsing anything previously witnessed in Final Fantasy. Titans like Titan Lost overshadow other behemoths like Ifrit, highlighting the sheer size and power of these ancient beings. The Eikons extend their influence beyond the showcase battles, as Clive’s abilities are unlocked and enhanced by the encounters with these powerful entities. Players will gather ability points to unlock and upgrade these skills, gradually transforming Clive into a formidable magic wielder.

Alongside conventional shops for acquiring weapons, armor, and consumables, Clive’s hideout features a blacksmith for equipment upgrades. The Arete Stone presents a unique training ground for players seeking high scores. This virtual training stage operates “outside of time and space”, allowing players to adjust variables such as enemy selection, regen, and more. The Arete Stone also incorporates an arcade mode that keeps track of global high scores, providing an opportunity for players to showcase their combat prowess.

Clive’s hideout also functions as a hub for side quests, offering a convenient map system to locate and track progress. Players can engage in Mob Hunts, similar to the Witcher series, where they take on monsters with bounties. For those seeking a change of pace, Loresman Harpocrates offers insight into the history and customs of Valisthea. Visiting Harpocrates regularly allows players to contribute to his Thousand Tomes, a comprehensive book filled with knowledge gathered from the realm. The Thousand Tomes feature classic-style sprites and music, reminiscent of older Final Fantasy games.

Vivian the Military Scholar provides an additional layer of exploration, offering updates on the world’s state and its historical events. Players can delve into the intricate relationships between characters and significant events that have shaped Valisthea. This feature serves as a helpful recap, particularly for players returning to the game after a break.
