E3 Canceled in 2023

The Impact of E3 on Gamers

For many gamers, E3 was their “video game Christmas.” It was the event where the biggest names in the industry, like console manufacturers and game publishers, unveiled their latest and greatest. From the announcement of the Wii U to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, E3 was the source of exciting news for gamers around the world.

E3’s cancellation removes a central hub for marketing new titles. However, with the rise of dedicated live-stream shows like Nintendo Directs, PlayStation’s State of Play, and Xbox’s Games Showcase, publishers have shifted their focus to virtual announcements.

What Killed E3?

E3’s decline began when major players like Sony and Nintendo started reducing their presence or pulling out entirely. These platform holders, along with their major publishers, were the stars of the show. E3 provided a platform for hundreds of announcements, creating a whirlwind of vying for attention.

Why Have Winners and Losers When Everyone Could Be Winners?

E3 was more than a glorified press conference; it created a narrative of winners and losers. The international media determined who thrived and who faltered, with winners experiencing increased sales and exposure while losers risked irrelevance. However, with the rise of digital announcements, the power dynamic shifted. Companies realized the potential for backlash from gamers who might not be impressed with a trailer or new hardware. Why subject themselves to potentially negative press when a press release could achieve the same result?

No Event Has Garnered As Much Attention As E3 Did

E3 had a massive reach, attracting around 66,000 attendees in 2019. While publishers have adopted a mix of live-stream marketing and in-house shows, no event has achieved E3’s level of notoriety. The gaming industry is still finding its footing in this new digital landscape.

The Future of Gaming Events

Despite E3’s cancellation, the gaming industry still embraces live events. June 2023 is packed with gaming-related news and showcases.

  • Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest on June 8th
  • Play Days, focusing on indie developers, on June 10th
  • Microsoft’s Xbox Showcase on June 11th
  • Ubisoft’s Forward Live show on June 12th

While E3 may be gone, the excitement and anticipation surrounding gaming events remain. The industry is evolving, and with it, the way we experience and consume gaming news. The future of gaming events is undoubtedly bright, even without E3.
