Season 8: Release Date, Patch Notes, and PTR
When does Season 8 start? Diablo 4 Season 8 starts on April 29, 2025 with a delay of two weeks. According to the Diablo boss, the update needs more development time than originally planned. In addition, an “old friend” comes into play.
Is there a PTR for Season 8? The PTR (public test realm) runs from March 11 to March 18, 2025. There you can test all the new content that Blizzard has shown in the livestream. This includes the new bosses, the changes to the summoning system, and also the seasonal mechanics. From March 13, you can get boosted on the PTR. Until then, you should try out the slower leveling.
Blizzard writes specifically about this in the blog post:
On PTR 2.2.0, we’re testing an updated leveling that reduces the experience gained from killing monsters until you reach level 25. Our goal is to improve leveling, which has been significantly accelerated in Season of Witchpower. […] Since this is an early game leveling change, we’re turning off the boost NPC for the first 2 days of the PTR to collect data on the new gameplay and get direct feedback on it.
Are there patch notes for Season 8? You can find the patch notes for Patch 2.2.0 for the upcoming PTR on the official Blizzard website. There you will get an overview of the content that is coming in Season 8.
Season 8: Theme, Features and New Uniques
What is the theme of Season 8? The official theme of Season 8 is not yet known. In any case, the focus is on the bosses and their powers.
What’s in Season 8? In the “Campfire Chat” livestream on March 7, 2025, the developers reported on the seasonal content and some “Quality of Life” changes in Diablo 4:
- Season mechanics: In Season 8, you take over the powers of 24 bosses when you defeat them. This allows you to acquire their attacks and strengthen your builds with them – or benefit from passive bonuses.
- New Seasonal Event: In the new Seasonal Apparition Raid event, you’ll encounter Belial’s Erscheinung monsters and have to drive them away. The event spawns every few minutes on all difficulty levels in a different area in Sanctuary. If you wipe out the monsters, one of 10 appearance bosses will spawn and finally a “smaller” variant of Belial himself. If you defeat the bosses, you can also grab their powers.
- Endgame bosses are “Hideout Bosses”: The endgame bosses are divided into three levels of “Hideout Bosses”: Contender, Great and Exalted. The larger ones include Andariel, Duriel and the Harbinger of Hatred. The exalted Hideout boss is Belial, who is supposed to be a really tough guy. In addition, the summoning of the bosses in Diablo 4 changes, because: you no longer need Mats for this. However, you can use the Mats to open chests after the boss fight to bag even more loot.
- Torment 4 gets harder: Blizzard’s philosophy is that only 10% of players reach Torment 4. In Season 7, however, it is 50%. They increase the difficulty by scaling up the pit levels. The monsters’ health points increase by 20% multiplicatively per level. Torment 1 starts at Pit Level 10, Torment 4 then corresponds to Pit Level 76 of the current Season 7.
- Slower progress to level 25: Leveling in Season 8 should no longer be as fast as in the current Season 7. This change is intended to reduce the need to constantly upgrade items in the early game and increase the value of activities and seasonal rewards. On top of that, Legendaries should drop less often and magical and rare items should become more useful again.
- “Quality of Life” updates: In the dungeon description from Season 8 onwards, you can see which Hideout Boss you will encounter in the dungeon and which Mats you will need to open the chest after the boss fight. To do this, you can teleport to the boss dungeon once you’ve discovered it.
- New Uniques: In Season 8, a total of 6 new Uniques will be added to the game – one per class.
