A proud tradition
Cow levels have been a beloved tradition in the Diablo series, adding a dose of lighthearted fun to the dark and gritty world. These special levels, featuring hordes of cows instead of the usual demonic foes, have appeared in both Diablo II and Diablo III, offering a unique change of pace and a chance to earn some extra experience points. Players have come to expect these secret areas as a fun Easter egg, and Diablo IV is no exception. But the developers at Blizzard have been oddly tight-lipped about the existence of a cow level in their latest installment.
Blizzard faces backlash
The absence of any confirmation regarding a cow level has sparked widespread speculation and frustration among Diablo IV players. Some have even accused Blizzard of deliberately hiding the level, potentially to unveil it as a surprise later down the line. While the company has neither confirmed nor denied its existence, they have been quick to deflect questions about the topic. Diablo IV Producer Joe Piepiora, when asked about the cow level, claimed he didn’t even know what players were talking about, and that he was confused by the “interest” in it.
“I don’t know what a cow level is, so I don’t really understand the interest in it. I get asked this a lot when I talk to people and maybe I just don’t get the reference,” Piepiora said. “It just seems like there’s a lot of stuff going on where the people are always asking about cows and they want to know about the cow level and then I’m like, ‘I don’t know. What do you even mean? What is this about?’”
While the developers might be trying to maintain an air of mystery, their lack of transparency has only fueled the speculation and disappointed players hoping for a familiar dose of bovine-based fun. The silence surrounding the cow level comes amidst other issues that have plagued Diablo IV since its release, including widespread complaints about balance changes leading up to Season 1, and a particularly unhappy Sorceress player base.
