Bungie Faces Backlash Over

POC Fans Offended by Bungie’s Use of the Word ‘Latinx’

Bungie, the developer of the popular game Destiny 2, recently launched Latin@Bungie, an employee resource group aiming to promote inclusivity within the company. However, their attempt to be inclusive by using the term “Latinx” in a recent X post about their IDEA initiative backfired, sparking outrage among members of the Hispanic community.

In response to the post, many users on X expressed their disapproval of the term, stating that it is not widely accepted and feels forced upon them. “Latinx” was introduced as a gender-neutral term for the Hispanic community, but many find it offensive and prefer to be referred to as Latino, Latina, or Latine.

Bungie’s decision to hide negative replies to the post further fueled the backlash, with many accusing the company of trying to silence criticism. This move ultimately backfired, as more people came forward to voice their displeasure. The incident has raised concerns about Bungie’s approach to inclusivity and its potential impact on the company’s reputation and sales.

Using ‘Latinx’ is Not Widely Accepted

The term “Latinx” was coined by academics and activists as a gender-inclusive representation for all Hispanics. The intention was to create a term that acknowledges non-binary and genderfluid individuals within the community. However, this well-meaning gesture has not been well-received by many Hispanics.

  • The term “Latinx” is not gender-neutral in Spanish. The suffix “-x” does not exist as a gender-neutral identifier in the language, which undermines the purpose of its creation.
  • Many Hispanics feel the term was imposed on them without their consent. The lack of consultation with the community regarding the adoption of “Latinx” has led to feelings of resentment and disregard for their language and identity.
  • The terms Latino and Latina are already inclusive and widely accepted. The existence of “Latine” as a more inclusive alternative also makes the use of “Latinx” seem redundant.

Inclusivity in Gaming

Inclusivity is becoming increasingly important in the gaming industry as companies strive to create more diverse and welcoming experiences for their players. By incorporating inclusive themes, characters, and storylines, developers aim to create games that are accessible to everyone and promote greater representation.

Inclusivity benefits the gaming industry in various ways:

  • Expands the market reach of games by attracting a wider audience.
  • Creates safer spaces for players from diverse backgrounds.
  • Provides opportunities for education and awareness about different cultures and experiences.
  • Promotes acceptance and understanding across different groups.

Bungie’s recent misstep highlights the importance of engaging with and listening to the communities they aim to represent. Developers need to carefully consider the language they use and ensure that their efforts are genuine and respectful. Bungie’s decision to silence criticism instead of addressing concerns has damaged their reputation and underscored the need for more nuanced and thoughtful approaches to inclusivity in gaming.
