Breeding Pokemon in Scarlet & Violet

Traditionally, Pokemon breeding has been a straightforward process: deposit a male and female Pokemon at a Day Care or Nursery, wait, and collect an egg. The egg would then hatch into a new Pokemon with inherited traits from its parents. While this method has worked well for generations, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet introduce a new way to get eggs: picnics.

Go On A Picnic, Get An Egg

In Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, picnics are more than just a social activity. Players can now have picnics with their Pokemon, and while relaxing, they may find an egg in a basket. The mechanics of this new egg-laying process are still unclear. It’s unknown if players need to pair specific Pokemon to get eggs, how frequently eggs appear, and what impact picnics have on egg hatching times. There’s also uncertainty about whether Egg Groups still influence which traits are passed down from parents.

Why Pokemon Day Care Centers/Nurseries Still Reign Supreme

Despite the introduction of picnics, Day Care Centers or Nurseries remain a popular method for breeding Pokemon. They offer players a structured approach to breeding, allowing them to strategically pair Pokemon for desired traits while simultaneously training other Pokemon. Picnics, however, might require players to dedicate specific time slots to breeding, potentially hindering their ability to multitask effectively. Ultimately, the efficacy of both methods will depend on how Game Freak integrates them into the gameplay.

Handle With Care

While picnics offer a charming new social element to Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, their effectiveness in breeding needs further clarification. If not carefully implemented, they could become cumbersome and inconvenient for trainers. However, if Game Freak finds the right balance, picnics could become a valuable tool for breeding, offering a more immersive and rewarding experience for players.

We’ll have to wait for the full release of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet to fully understand how the new egg-laying mechanics work and whether picnics will become a beloved or frustrating aspect of breeding. Until then, we can only speculate on the potential impact of this change on the game’s breeding system.
