Games to Play After Watching Fallout
The Fallout series is a beloved franchise for good reason, and now there’s a live-action show based on it. While you’re waiting for the next episode, you might find yourself itching to get back into the world of post-apocalyptic RPGs. If that’s the case, here are 6 games to check out.
Wasteland 3
Before Fallout, there was Wasteland. This 1988 RPG set the stage for post-apocalyptic RPGs with its weird plot and tactical battles against raiders. The original Wasteland and its 2014 sequel are still excellent, but Wasteland 3 is the series’ peak, making it an excellent place for newcomers to start. It’s all about strategic decision-making as you guide your squad of Desert Rangers through the ruins of the American Rocky Mountains. Wasteland 3 offers a solid tactical RPG experience that shows an absurdist side to a dark post-apocalypse.
Metro Exodus
The Metro series from developer 4A Games shows what the post-nuclear apocalypse looks like outside of America. Based on the sci-fi novels by Dmitry Glukhovsky, the Metro games focus on surviving harrowing encounters in the remains of Russia following nuclear war. Metro Exodus, the culmination of a trilogy of narrative-driven shooters, takes the series into an open-world setting for exploration and survival. Playing as Artyom, you journey through the different regions across Russia, relying on crafting and resource management to survive encounters with bandits and mutants. Metro Exodus is an excellent jumping-on point for the series, focusing on survival in large-scale environments while giving its characters a satisfying conclusion.
The Outer Worlds
Obsidian Entertainment, known for Fallout: New Vegas, created The Outer Worlds, a sci-fi RPG full of absurdist humor and gory action. Set in a timeline where American businesses never faced regulations and space exploration led to a new age of capitalism, you lead a crew of misfits as you travel the galaxy and clash with megacorporations that control everything. The Outer Worlds is basically Firefly mashed up with Fallout, with a hyper-capitalist universe full of comedy and absurdity. You can build your protagonist to be a smooth-talking explorer who can talk their way out of trouble or a cunning rogue who solves their problems with a blaster shot. With a loveable set of companions, The Outer Worlds is an excellent pick for those who want a sci-fi spin on an RPG.
Horizon: Forbidden West
The Horizon series from Guerrilla Games explores a ruined earth following a robot apocalypse. Forbidden West follows up on the excellent Zero Dawn by showcasing a more detailed world and giving protagonist Aloy more ways to engage with its quests and characters. Not to mention, there are even more machines to fight and subdue. Forbidden West takes the story to the ruins of the American West Coast, showing how the remnants of San Francisco and Las Vegas have evolved in the post-robot apocalypse. The Horizon games are fun to explore, learning how the world has changed following the end of the world. The series really leans into the wonder and weirdness of the post-apocalypse, and Forbidden West is the series at its best.
STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl
The STALKER series makes you feel insignificant in a hostile world, offering terrifying and thrilling moments. The original STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl is still a fantastic survival experience about dealing with the phenomena and hostile factions within the Zone, the irradiated Chornobyl. The game presents an unforgiving and atmospheric world that you have to contend with, managing your resources and protecting yourself from radiation. You’ll often face an unexpected death, but that’s what makes STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl such a classic. With recent remasters of the game and its expansions, it’s now a great time to give this uncompromising action RPG a try.
Cyberpunk 2077
Since its 2020 release, CD Projekt Red has rebuilt and expanded upon Cyberpunk 2077, making it one of the best modern action RPGs. Set in the lawless Night City, the sci-fi urban setting is a fantastic change of pace from other dystopian shooters and RPGs, and it scratches that post-apocalyptic itch. With an amazing cast of characters, Cyberpunk 2077 shines for its approach to role-playing and fast-paced combat. You’re put right in the middle of a hostile yet enthralling city filled with encounters and quests. The vibes of Night City are electric, and getting immersed within the sprawl is a thrill. If you haven’t tried Cyberpunk 2077 yet and want something that offers a rich role-playing experience, then you can’t go wrong with this modern classic.
