What are Stygian Stones?
Since Season 4, there have been “Tormented” versions of all the bosses you can summon in Diablo 4. They require 3 times the amount of Mats to summon and an additional Stygian Stone each. The bosses then have level 200, but also drop more loot.
In order to summon the bosses, you don’t just have to farm the “normal” boss mats, but also Stygian stones. There are two sources for this, from another you get them once in the season.
Farming Stygian Stones in the Pit
What is the pit?
The Pit is an endgame activity that came into the game in Season 4. This is a new dungeon that works roughly like a Greater Rift from Diablo 3. You open a portal in Cerrigar, get into random areas with random enemies, and have to kill enough monsters to summon a boss.
How do I farm in the pit?
In the pit, you can open a reward box after the boss fight. In addition to loot, it contains mats for “masterworking” in Diablo 4. With the crafting system, you can improve your gear with mats that have different rarity levels. In addition, Stygian stones can drop in the pit, the chance of this depends on the level of the pit.
Patch 1.4.2 has increased the drop chance of the stones. According to Blizzard, the chances of getting a Stygian Stone for completing the pit are:
- 5% at level 1
- 10% at level 40
- 18% at level 100
- 30% at level 200
Farming Stygian Stones in the Hell Hordes
What are the Hell Hordes?
With Season 5, another option moved into Diablo 4 to farm Stygian Stones: the Hell Hordes. This is an endgame activity in which you fight against waves of monsters. Finally, 3 bosses from the “Cruel Council” await you – if you defeat them, you can choose between reward boxes: Loot, Gold or Mats.
How do I farm in Hellhordes?
If you fight monster waves and the bosses, you collect “Burning Aether”, which you can use to open crates at the end. The crates “cost” 20 Aether, the large reward chest with items can be opened with 60 Aether. There is also a box that you can use to exchange your remaining aether for gold. One player invested his entire ether in it and collected almost 150 million gold.
Depending on the level of the Hell Hordes, you will get rarer crafting materials for Masterworking, but also Stygian Stones. For this, you need a compass with which you can play the activity (at least) at level 7 to farm the stones. In the end, you choose as many Mats chests as possible.

The Hellhordes are a good way to farm Mats overall and make the pit “unnecessary” for some.

Where else can I get the Stygian Stones?
The stones can drop with a small chance from the world bosses at world level 4. Another way to get Stygian Stones is the Season Journey. It has a total of 7 stages, which in turn consist of different destinations. If you complete a certain number of objectives for a stage, you will receive rewards – including Stygian Stones.
However, you can only complete the Season Journey once per season and farm the loot, so the stones from the source are limited.
