In Diablo 4, you can use the crafting systems to make your items really strong. You can find out how the two mechanics “Hardening” and “Completion” work here on iGV.
Since Season 4, there have been fewer affixes overall and the number of affixes on items themselves has been reduced. In terms of crafting, two new mechanics came into play:
- With the “Tempering” you add new affixes to items
- With “Masterworking” you upgrade the values of your affixes.
With the two crafting mechanics, you can build really strong items and improve them even further. We explain how the systems work and when you can use them.
Hardening: How to add affixes to your items
How do I unlock hardening? You can use the hardening once you have collected enough materials. These include “Cloudy Crystals” and rawhide. This is therefore worthwhile quite early in the game, because you can use it to make your gear stronger – thus also yourself and your skills.
What do I do with the curing? In the world of Sanctuary, you’ll find hardening instructions as drops on most activities. When you learn them, you can use them at a blacksmith to increase the quality of your legendary gear and adapt it to your builds. Uniques are exempt from this.
Hardening adds two of the available affixes to an item. This way you can build really strong items without having to hope for good loot drops forever.
For hardening, you will need a few materials that you already know in addition to the instructions. You can use learned crafting instructions as often as you want. Each guide contains a small number of affixes that correspond to six different categories:
- Weapons
- Attack
- Defense
- Mobility
- Versatility
- Resource
Can I undo the curing? The Scroll of Restoration allows you to restore all Tempering Charges on an item. The scrolls can only be used once per item.
Completion: How to upgrade affixes on items
How do I unlock completion? You can complete your items at the blacksmith if you have collected suitable loot in your inventory and autopsy in the endgame. You can get the autopsy in Nightmare Dungeons and in the Pit, among other places. Legendary and unique pieces of equipment that you have already hardened twice can be used as items.
What do I do with completion? With completion, you upgrade your items at the blacksmith, which increases the value of all affixes. There are a total of 12 upgrade levels for ancestral items, and 8 for all others. With every 4th level, one of the equipped affixes “critical” is upgraded. As a result, you may get really high rolls – even beyond the original “Max Roll”.
The affix that receives the bonus will turn blue. If you upgrade the same affix again, it will turn yellow, and if you upgrade it a third time, it will turn orange. Since Season 6, you only need Obpsy to complete it.
Can I undo completion? You can undo completion by clicking on “Reset Ranks”. On PC you will find the button to the right of the field for the item, on console you will see a button at the bottom that you have to press.
Upon completion, you can reset the ranks on items as many times as you want. However, you will lose all previous upgrades, including those that may already be really strong. In addition, the process really goes into gold and mats.
For the two crafting systems in Diablo 4, you’ll need a bunch of materials once you’ve arrived at the endgame and want to improve your builds. Not only does the autopsy play a role, but also “ordinary” materials such as Cloudy Crystals and Rawhide.
