Best Mercenary Builds in Diablo 2: Resurrected (Part 1)

Best Mercenary Builds in D2:R

Mercenaries in Diablo 2: Resurrected are no longer mere support characters. Their damage output and survivability are significantly enhanced, making them a crucial component for many builds. Players often invest significant resources in equipping them, taking advantage of their boosted stats and helpful auras. Remember, only one mercenary can be active at a time, and hiring a new one replaces the existing one’s equipment. Understanding how to effectively use mercenaries to maximize your character class is essential.

Act I Mercenaries

Act I mercenaries, primarily ranged archers, offer two skill sets: Cold Arrow and Inner Sight, or Fire Arrow and Inner Sight. The Cold Arrow option excels due to its enemy slowing ability, beneficial for both kiting and providing tactical advantage to casters. The Fire Arrow option, while having a slightly less desirable slow effect, can still be viable. Inner Sight is important to both options in helping you see and keep track of nearby enemies to quickly act on any threats. For Act I mercenaries, equipping them with the right Rune Words is paramount. A popular choice is Faith for its Fanaticism Aura, boosting your physical damage output significantly. This is perfect for physical damage-dealing classes.

  • Rune Word: Faith (Fanaticism Aura) significantly boosts physical damage for your party. Look for high level Fanaticism for a massive damage boost
  • Rune Word: Wrath (Decripify) – slows and weakens enemies against physical damage, best for melee classes or Wind Druids.
  • Rune Word: Ice (Frost Nova and Holy Freeze Aura) slows enemies and decreases their cold resistance, ideal for Cold Magic users.
  • Rune Word: Harmony (Vigor Aura) – boosts movement speed.

Weapon and Armor Recommendations

For weapons, consider Rune Words that maximize your character’s strengths. Treachery is a cost-effective option with increased attack speed and a chance to cast Fade (increases resistance and decreases curse duration, and lowers physical damage taken by 1% per skill). For armor, Tal-Rasha’s Helmet is a good choice for budget dual leech, while higher-end options like Guillame’s Face (Crushing Blow, Deadly Strike) or Giant Skull Bone Visage/Andariel’s Visage offer exceptional damage potential.

Act 2 Mercenaries

Act II mercenaries, the Desert Warriors of Lut Gholein, are often preferred due to their potent auras like Holy Freeze and Might. Might is beneficial for melee characters and casters alike, bolstering their damage output. Choosing weapons with high attack speed is often recommended.

  • Rune Word: Insight (Meditation Aura) is valuable for casters, boosting mana regeneration. Perfect for early-to-mid game.
  • Rune Word: Pride (Concentration Aura) dramatically enhances your character’s attack, reduces interruption chance, and greatly boosts damage. (Requires high-level runes making it expensive but high payoff)
  • Rune Word: Infinity (Conviction Aura) is excellent for lightning damage characters. It lowers enemies’ Lightning Resistance which helps characters with spells like Lightning or Chain Lightning.

Recommended Weapon and Armor

Insight offers excellent mana regeneration for casters. Pride provides a massive damage boost, reducing interruption chance, but requires more expensive runes. Infinity is perfect for lightning-damage characters. For armor, treachery is a good, cost-effective option for increasing attack speed and adding to your mercenary’s survivability. High-end options, like Tal-Rasha’s Helmet, Guillame’s Face, or Giant Skull/Andariel’s Visage can greatly impact damage.

This covers the initial Acts, providing a good starting point for understanding mercenary builds. Future articles will delve deeper into Act 3 and 5 mercenary options, as well as offering strategic hacks and tips to maximize their effectiveness.
