Destiny 2: Cross Save – A Comprehensive Guide
How do I set it up?
Activating Cross Save is straightforward. Visit Bungie’s official Cross Save confirmation page and click “Get Started”. Confirm your accounts on the platforms you wish to link. Select your desired characters, and the system will guide you through the process. Review and accept the terms to finalize the connection. This process ensures your progress will seamlessly transfer between platforms.
Crucially, this system doesn’t allow merging characters from different accounts onto a single platform. Each character remains tied to its original account.
Future content releases will not be platform-exclusive, and you will not be able to import content from one account to another account.
Do I have to purchase DLCs again?
Unfortunately, if you wish to play Destiny 2 across different platforms, you need to own the DLC on each platform where you intend to play. The DLCs will not automatically transfer. This applies to all previous DLCs as well.
If you’re considering cross-platform play before the “New Light” free-to-play version is available, purchasing the base game on a new platform will be necessary.
Which of my owned items will transfer?
- Weapons
- Armor
- Bright Dust
- Expansions/DLCs
- Cosmetics
All of the aforementioned in-game items and content are supported in the Cross Save system. Rest assured that your invested time and effort will smoothly transition between supported platforms.
What about silver purchases?
Silver purchased on one platform remains tied to that platform. A one-time transfer option is available only for shifting from Battle.net to Steam. While weapons, armor, and character progress will transfer, the currency itself will not.
Be sure to redeem any silver purchases before making a platform transition.
What are “Shadowkeep” and “New Light”?
Shadowkeep is a new expansion releasing in October, available for pre-order on Steam. New Light is the free-to-play version of Destiny 2, incorporating a significant portion of previous content.
- The base campaign
- Curse of Osiris and Warmind
- Exploration of all major planets
- Crucible and Gambit access
- Certain Strikes and Year 1 Raids
- Future non-DLC updates
If you already own the included content, you will not receive a refund. Consider the Complete Edition if you want all previous content.
What if I own Forsaken on Battle.net and want to play it on Steam?
You do not need to purchase Forsaken on Steam. Your existing Battle.net progress will seamlessly transfer to Steam. You will not need to re-purchase any DLCs.
Will Forsaken be available on Steam? Do I need Forsaken to play Shadowkeep?
Forsaken will be available on Steam. However, the preferred method of purchase might be bundle editions. Shadowkeep can be played without owning Forsaken or the corresponding annual pass.
What about Stadia players on PC?
Stadia is treated as a separate platform. Matchmaking between Stadia and other platforms like Steam does not fall under cross-play and will not be supported.
What about my Battle.net friends?
Your Battle.net friends list will not transfer to Steam. You will need to add them again on the Steam platform if you wish to play with them.
Can I disable Cross Save?
You can disable Cross Save; however, if you re-enable it, there will be a 90-day waiting period before it can be re-activated. Please note that this switch is permanent. If separate progress on multiple platforms is desired, consider disabling Cross Save.
Final Thoughts
Destiny 2’s Cross Save functionality offers a smoother experience for PC players migrating to Steam. The seamless transition between platforms allows players to maintain their progress and enjoy the game on their preferred platform. The introduction of the free-to-play model (New Light) promises a wider appeal. The future looks promising with the introduction of Cross Save and potential future inclusion of Cross Play, bringing more players into the Destiny 2 universe.
