Black Swan is a 5-star Wind-Type Nihility character in Honkai Star Rail, known for her unique DoT (Damage over Time) application and defense shredding capabilities. Her playstyle revolves around maximizing Arcana stacks, a special DoT that deals Wind-Type damage and scales with the number of stacks applied. Arcana stacks can be generated through various means, including Black Swan’s Basic ATK, Skill, dealing DoT damage, or triggering DoT effects through allies.
Her optimal build prioritizes Effect Hit Rate and ATK% to maximize Arcana application and damage output. Her trace upgrade priority follows this order: Talent ≥ Skill ≥ Ultimate ≥ Basic ATK. Her minor traces offer valuable boosts to Effect Hit Rate and ATK%, further enhancing her performance.
Talent (Loom of Fate’s Caprice)
Black Swan’s Talent, “Loom of Fate’s Caprice,” plays a crucial role in her Arcana application by providing various benefits:
- At the start of an enemy’s turn, a chance to deal Arcana damage is triggered whenever an enemy is hit by a DoT (excluding Arcana).
- With 3 or more Arcana stacks, Arcana damage becomes AoE and has a high chance of inflicting additional Arcana stacks on adjacent enemies.
- Reaching 7 or more Arcana stacks grants Arcana damage the ability to ignore 20% of the enemy’s defenses, further enhancing damage potential.
Basic ATK (Percipience, Silent Dawn)
Black Swan’s Basic ATK, “Percipience, Silent Dawn,” is a single-target attack with a high chance of applying one stack of Arcana. It also has a chance to apply one more stack of Arcana if the targeted enemy already has other DoTs (Wind Shear, Bleed, Burn, or Shock) applied, emphasizing her synergy with other DoT characters.

It also has a high chance of shredding up to 22% of enemy defenses, further amplifying overall damage output.
Ultimate (Bliss of Otherworld’s Embrace)

Unlocked at Ascension Lv. 60, “Goblet’s Dredges” gives Black Swan a chance to inflict enemies entering battle with one stack of Arcana. It also enables the generation of up to three additional Arcana stacks whenever an ally inflicts a DoT, further enhancing her synergy with DoT teams and allowing for a quick buildup of Arcana stacks.
A6 (Candleflame’s Portent)
Unlocked at Ascension Lv. 70, “Candleflame’s Portent” significantly boosts Black Swan’s damage output by increasing it by 60% of her Effect Hit Rate, with a cap of 72%. Building Effect Hit Rate for reliable Arcana application also translates into substantial damage amplification, making her a truly formidable force in combat.
