Assassin's Creed Lead Leaves Ubisoft

Assassin’s Creed Franchise Loses Key Leader: Marc-Alexis Côté Departs Ubisoft

Summary of Departure

Marc-Alexis Côté, a long-time figurehead for the Assassin’s Creed franchise, is leaving Ubisoft after over 20 years with the company. The announcement was made internally to Ubisoft staff. This change happens shortly after Assassin’s Creed became part of Vantage Studios, a new business entity established by Ubisoft with partial investment from Tencent. Côté’s departure marks a significant shift in the leadership overseeing one of Ubisoft’s most important intellectual properties.

Vantage Studios and Leadership Alignment

Ubisoft’s decision to create Vantage Studios is directly tied to its flagship franchises, including Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six. A key aspect of this reorganization involves leadership alignment within the new structure. Côté was offered a position within Vantage Studios’ leadership team. However, he ultimately declined the offer, opting to pursue opportunities outside of Ubisoft.

  • The aim is to streamline operations and enhance focus on key franchises.
  • Vantage Studios signifies a new era for these IPs.

Internal Reactions and Ubisoft’s Statement

Christophe Derennes, co-CEO of Vantage Studios, expressed his disappointment over Côté’s decision in an internal message. He noted that Côté possessed “his own expectations and priorities” regarding the creation and direction of Vantage Studios. Ubisoft issued a formal statement acknowledging Côté’s departure. They expressed gratitude for his numerous contributions, especially his impact on the Assassin’s Creed brand. They wished him well in his future endeavors.

Côté’s Extensive History with Ubisoft

Côté’s journey at Ubisoft began in 2005. His initial role was as a software engineer. He then advanced to become a lead engine programmer, contributing to “Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands.” His involvement with the Assassin’s Creed series began with “Brotherhood,” where he served as a lead level designer. Eventually, he rose to the position of game director for “Assassin’s Creed III”, and his career developed from then on.

Creative Directorship and Major Projects

As a creative director at Ubisoft Quebec, Côté played a pivotal role in several significant projects. His contributions included the “Freedom Cry” DLC for “Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag”, “Assassin’s Creed Syndicate”, and “Assassin’s Creed Odyssey”. He served as a senior producer for “Odyssey.” These projects showcased his creative vision and leadership capabilities within the Assassin’s Creed franchise.

Taking the Reins of the Assassin’s Creed Franchise

In March 2022, Côté took on the role of overseeing the entire Assassin’s Creed franchise. This happened during a period of strategic realignment at Ubisoft. The company wanted to create a more interconnected narrative experience through the Animus Hub, initially known as Assassin’s Creed Infinity. Côté was responsible for outlining a comprehensive slate of upcoming projects, which included the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Hexe.

Defending the Series’ Storytelling

Amid the controversy surrounding Yasuke, the Black samurai protagonist in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Côté passionately defended the series’ narrative choices. In a speech at the BAFTA awards, he expressed his dismay at the online backlash. He reiterated the importance of historical accuracy and diversity in the games. Côté also cited the game’s delay as necessary for achieving the high quality expected by the fan base.

Ubisoft’s Commitment to Diversity

Côté emphasized that the Assassin’s Creed series has always been committed to exploring the entirety of human history, acknowledging its diverse nature. He maintained that staying true to history meant embracing a spectrum of human perspectives without compromise. Ubisoft’s spokesperson said they were deeply grateful for Côté’s impact over the years, particularly in shaping the Assassin’s Creed brand into what it is today, and wished him continued success in all his future endeavors.

Canceled Assassin’s Creed Title and Concerns

News of Côté’s departure comes shortly after reports surfaced about Ubisoft’s decision to cancel an Assassin’s Creed game set in the post-Civil War era. This title featured a former Black slave fighting the Ku Klux Klan. The project was reportedly scrapped due to concerns surrounding the political climate in the United States. The timing of these two events raises questions about the future direction of the Assassin’s Creed franchise.
