Is It Too Late? Official Release and ARK Survival Evolved Tek Tier
The Troubled Past
ARK: Survival Evolved, a massively popular survival game, has been in Early Access for over two years. This extended development period has allowed for numerous updates and four DLCs, and even today, the game boasts over 50,000 daily active players. However, this longevity isn’t without its caveats. The game still suffers from persistent bugs and glitches, often exploitable by players. Performance issues remain a significant hurdle, particularly for players with less powerful computers. Even those with top-tier hardware sometimes find themselves forced to play on lower settings to achieve playable frame rates. The core gameplay mechanics have not been thoroughly addressed. The issues haven’t improved with the passage of time, which is a core concern.
Tek Tier Travesty
The January 2017 “Tek Tier” update, intended to add advanced technology, ironically complicated the game further. What was once a survival challenge against prehistoric creatures transformed into a contest between advanced tribes, armed with superior tech. This update introduced a significant power imbalance. Well-organized, large tribes, using the new tech, gained a considerable advantage, overwhelming smaller groups and leaving them struggling to survive. The game mechanics, now laden with high-tech weaponry and mechanisms, created an unfair advantage for large groups. The result was an unfortunate loss of the original gameplay loops.
Official Server Travel
The ability to transfer between official servers with complete inventories and tamed dinosaurs worsened existing problems. Organized “super-tribes,” equipped with the most advanced weaponry and creatures, relentlessly targeted servers with weaker players. This constant raiding created desolate official servers dominated by small groups. Players were faced with a bleak outlook, losing motivation. Ultimately, this aspect of the game made the PVP experience unappealing and demoralizing for many.
Pricing Problems
While many survival games have suffered similar issues, ARK: Survival Evolved‘s recent price increase raises serious questions about the developer’s priorities. The base game price, originally steep, has been doubled. This sudden surge prompted a massive wave of negative feedback and reviews on the Steam store. Concerns remain about the financial motivations behind this decision. Is this a strategic move to control player numbers or a last-minute cash grab before the game’s Early Access ends? The pricing decision clearly didn’t sit well with many long-time players and the resulting bad press didn’t help either.
Final Verdict
Despite its compelling content and replayability, ARK: Survival Evolved‘s core issues make its current pricing untenable. After two years in Early Access, fundamental problems persist, such as performance, game balance and general gameplay feel. Doubling the base game price seems out of sync with the game’s still-unresolved issues. The official release, in theory, signals a completion of the product. However, based on the existing problems, this release, with its hefty price tag, feels like a rushed effort, rather than a genuine commitment to fixing core flaws.
On one hand, the game still offers hours of fun. On the other, the current state necessitates a greater focus on patching, balancing, and improving player experience before a definitive release is declared. Ultimately, the question of whether the release is too late is both a yes and no, depending on whether you focus on the game’s still-unresolved problems or the hours of gameplay and content still offered. The price increase further underscores the perceived lack of effort to fix core issues. It feels like the game is more interested in increasing profitability rather than improving the end-user experience.
