(1) Tell us about yourself (name/nickname, hometown, age, occupation, favorite games that you play and what platform(s) you play)?
Hi, my name is Seungwoo Lee. I’m 28 years old, and a programmer from Anyang City, South Korea. I’m primarily a PC gamer. I mainly play League of Legends and StarCraft: Brood War. Of course, I also enjoy Fortnite Battle Royale and PUBG, but I can’t play as many shooter/FPS games because I experience motion sickness.
(2) Share with us how it feels to be the creator of something big for this game?
The overwhelming response in terms of downloads was a total surprise at first. We were incredibly happy and grateful when our app became so popular. With over 250,000 downloads, there’s a sense of responsibility to keep it thriving.
(3) What inspired you to create an app specifically for this game? When did it cross your mind to create your app?
I initially created the StarCraft Guide app. However, not many people were playing StarCraft at the time. We thought of a popular game that people would play a lot, and that was Fortnite and PUBG. I was a little worried because I wasn’t very good at Fortnite, so I created this Fortnite app by studying the game intensely.
(4) Do you work independently or in a team? If in a team, how big is it?
I work with a team, and it’s a small but amazing group that I love working with.
(5) From the developer’s and gamer’s perspective, how do you think the app affects the overall experience of the game?
Firstly, many users were uncomfortable with web searches when there weren’t many mobile stat apps available. Searches are more convenient on an app, not the web. Secondly, the app’s fast update feature, which provides information on new weapons and maps, allows users to quickly adapt to Fortnite’s updates.
(6) Is there any margin of error when it comes to the app’s performance and provided information?
In the early days of the app, there were occasional inaccuracies. However, due to user feedback and our efforts, errors are now much less frequent.
(7) When it comes to designing the user experience/UX of the app, what motivated you or what influences did you have?
Before creating the Guide for Fortnite, there was a Fortnite guide app that people already used. I considered that app when designing mine, but its UI/UX wasn’t very user-friendly. I aimed to create a much more intuitive and easy-to-use UI/UX.
(8) What programming language or tool did you use to create this app? Do you have any favorite PLs or tools in particular?
The app is written in Java. The IDE used is Android Studio. However, my favorite language is C# and my preferred IDE is Visual Studio. I personally find C# much easier to use than Java.
(9) What were your biggest challenges for this project? How did you overcome them?
The biggest challenge was promoting our app to get more users. We shared useful information on the Fortnite portal site and highlighted our app. We also added unique content to stand out from other Fortnite guide apps.
(10) Are you expecting the game’s expansions to change your app’s dynamics and performance? Is it something that you’ve already prepared to tackle?
We are always ready to adapt to new game updates; if the game changes, then our app needs to change with it. We closely monitor any changes to the game.
(11) Are there any exciting new developments for your app that you would care to share?
We just released a new version of Guide for Fortnite last week. We’ve incorporated the new weapon and Season 5 map updates. Be sure to download the updated version.
