The current antagonist in World of Warcraft puts her in a completely different light. Haven’t we been mistaken about it after all?
Xal’atath is the current major threat in World of Warcraft—one that is set to run through the entire World Souls saga. In Patch 11.2 Spirits of K’aresh, the strange Void creature will once again play a role in the body of a dead elf—but probably a different one than expected by the community. Who is Xal’atath?
The exact origin of Xal’atath has long been a mystery. Initially, it was the artifact weapon of the Shadow Priests, but over the years it has gained much more background story. In the meantime, she is the antagonist of the World Soul saga.
Since she has often been called “Herald of Dimensius” in the past, many assumed that her ultimate goal was to bring the Void Lord Dimensius to Azeroth to devour the World Soul.
But now it turns out: No, that’s not the case at all.
What does Xal’atath do in patch 11.2?
She is our ally. The spacewalker, Alleria’s mentor, comes to an agreement with Xal’atath. She will help us understand what’s going on in K’aresh and try to prevent the Void Lord Dimensius from being resurrected by the Shadow Guardians.
The Shadow Guardians attempt to manifest the Void Lord again. If he succeeds, he would probably target Azeroth afterwards – something that probably means death for all inhabitants of the world.
But here’s the twist: Xal’atath doesn’t want that either! She apparently has completely different plans for the world soul of Azeroth and did not intend to fall victim to Dimensius.
Therefore, she supports us in patch 11.2 and gives the artifact cloak, the “Rishii Wrap”, her power. This allows us to enter the astral world and ultimately gives us access to the raid and thus also to the oversized raid boss Dimensius.
Is Xal’atath “good” now?
No. She does not make a 180° turn and her deeds are not forgotten. She has many beings of Azeroth on her conscience and especially the mages of the Kirin Tor should not forget the destruction of the city and the killing of so many colleagues in a hurry.
The incidents in patch 11.2 seem to be a clear case of “the enemy of my enemy is my friend”. So this is just a temporary alliance for the purpose of a single target – it’s highly likely that Xal’atath will soon betray us and go back to her own plans. Whatever they may be.
At least shadow priests can rejoice, because once again they can work side by side with their former “Knaifu-Waifu”. Even if it is not yet clear what plans Xal’atath is actually pursuing. However, we will probably find out in Midnight, because in the next expansion, the Void will break over Azeroth – along with the long-awaited housing.
