Metaphor: ReFantazio’s Archetypes – A Deep Dive

Metaphor: ReFantazio, a game rooted in the Persona RPG formula, introduces a compelling Archetype system. Unlike the more flexible Persona system, Archetypes in Metaphor function more like traditional classes, allowing players to switch roles and combine skills for diverse playstyles. This article explores each Archetype, its strengths, and how it fits within the game’s combat mechanics.

Seeker Archetype

The Seeker, your starting Archetype, is a support-focused role. It balances offensive and defensive buffs effectively. Its unique passive, “Chase Support,” enhances party member support attacks and simplifies stunning enemies in the overworld. The Seeker progresses through three tiers: Seeker, Magic Seeker, and Soul Hacker, each unlocking through specific bond rankings. This Archetype’s primary function is bolstering the party’s capabilities.

Warrior Archetype

The Warrior is a classic physical melee class. Its skills focus on single-target damage, relying heavily on physical attacks. While versatile, it lacks the element-exploiting abilities of other classes. The Warrior’s passive, “Barge Past,” is useful for preventing enemy initiative in the overworld encounters. It progresses through Warrior, Swordmaster, Samurai, and Royal Warrior, all unlocked through Strohl’s Bond events.

Mage Archetype

The Mage excels at exploiting enemy elemental weaknesses through a diverse range of Fire, Electric, Dark, and Ice spells. Its high MP-restoration skills provide significant offensive and defensive versatility. Unlike some Archetypes, the Mage has alternate Elite forms, unlocking through other Archetype progression. Magic Recovery, the Mage’s passive, replenishes MP after stunning or defeating enemies in the overworld. The Mage’s progression includes Mage, Wizard, and either Elemental Master or Warlock, unlocked through Gallica’s Bond storyline.

Healer Archetype

The Healer, predictably, is a dedicated support role. It focuses on recovering health and removing debuffs for the party, alongside some offensive support spells. Its passive, “Support Recovery,” restores party health with each successful support attack in overworld encounters. The Healer’s straightforward progression leads through Healer, Cleric, and Saviour, tied to Maria’s bond progression.

Knight Archetype

The Knight prioritizes defense and resilience. Its skills excel at drawing enemy attention and taking damage. While providing some physical damage, it shines in its defensive capabilities. The Knight’s passive, “Auto-Repel,” grants a chance to reflect enemy attacks that hit the Knight in overworld battles. The Knight’s progression features the Knight, Magic Knight, Paladin or Dark Knight, and Royal Knight. Unlocking the Dark Knight path requires reaching Wizard rank 10.

Brawler Archetype

The Brawler is unique in its health-based skill system. Its damage increases as health decreases, encouraging aggressive playstyles. It’s a powerful damage dealer when its health dips low. This Archetype also features self-healing abilities. Brawler’s passive, “Surprise Upset,” significantly enhances stunning powerful enemies in the overworld. It progresses from Brawler, Pugilist, and Martial Artist. The Brawler’s bond progresses with Catherina.

Merchant Archetype

The Merchant’s playstyle is distinct. It focuses on maximizing gains in loot and currency after each battle. Its damage skills, while low-hit chance, possess significant Almighty damage, making them valuable additions to groups. The Merchant’s passive, “Alchemy,” provides bonus currency upon stunning or defeating overworld enemies. The Merchant’s progression includes the Merchant and Tycoon, becoming available after reaching Wisdom Rank 2 and completing Brigitta’s questline.

Gunner Archetype

The Gunner excels as a ranged physical damage dealer. Many of its skills are designed for distance, making them effective for taking down enemies from afar. Unfortunately, this reliance on distance makes them more vulnerable in close combat. The Gunner’s passive, “Comeback Victory,” restores health upon defeating overworld enemies. The Gunner evolves through Gunner, Sniper, and Dragoon. To unlock this Archetype, you must complete Neuras’ questline involving the Relic.

Thief Archetype

The Thief is a high-damage single-target Archetype, focusing on swiftly draining enemy health and MP. It excels at imbuing attacks with Dark damage and applying status effects like “Hex.” Its passive, “Pickpocket,” provides a chance at loot after defeating enemies in the overworld. The Thief progresses through Thief, Assassin, Ninja, and Royal Thief. This Archetype is unlocked as part of the main story and is connected to Heismay’s Bond questline.

Masked Dancer Archetype

The Masked Dancer stands apart with its Mask-based skill swapping. Each Mask offers different, weaker versions of Archetype skills, promoting versatile play. The Masked Dancer’s lack of a standard passive reinforces this versatility. It has three tiers: Masked Dancer, Persona Master, and Royal Masked Dancer. This Archetype unlocks during the main story, but achieving party-wide access requires completing the “Save the Mourning Snakes” questline. It progresses through Junah’s bond.

Faker Arcehtype

The Faker, in contrast, excels at applying debuffs and status effects to enemies, sacrificing raw damage. It excels when paired with high-damage party members. Its passive, “Dodge,” allows automatic dodging of overworld enemy attacks. It progresses from Faker to Trickster, becoming accessible after completing Martira’s questline and obtaining Malveno’s Ring through Alonzo’s quest.

Commander Archetype

The Commander is the balanced party anchor, providing crucial buffs to allies and dealing adequate damage. It strengths the entire party. Its passive, “Enhanced Cooperation,” increases the likelihood of stunning enemies with support attacks in overworld encounters. The Commander progresses from Commander to General to Warlord, unlocking after completing a primary dungeon in Martira.

Summoner Archetype

The Summoner draws from the Shin Megami Tensei legacy by using Vessels to summon Demons. It’s the most versatile spellcaster in the game but requires gathering crafting resources from across the world. Its passive, “Status Differential,” makes overworld enemies less likely to gain advantage when attacking the Summoner. It progresses through Summoner, Devil Summoner, and Royal Summoner. Summoner progression unlocks through Eupha’s Bond storyline and requires conquering the Dragon Temple dungeon.

Berserker Archetype

The Berserker is a high-damage physical Archetype. Its passive, “Combat Specialization,” further enhances damage output and provides health recovery post-overworld victory. The Berserker excels in both physical combat and overworld encounters. It progresses through Berserker to Destroyer. This Archetype is unlocked during the later parts of the game, connected to Basilio’s bond progression.
