Persona 4: Areas for Improvement

What Atlus Should Improve for Persona 4 Revival

Atlus is known for its excellent remakes, and the upcoming Persona 4 Revival offers a chance to build on the success of Persona 3 Reload. While Persona 3 Reload had its strengths, like enhanced graphics, it also had shortcomings. To truly make Persona 4 Revival shine, Atlus should concentrate on several key improvements that elevate the game beyond a simple graphical update.

Include All Content from Persona 4 Golden

Persona 4 Golden stands as the definitive version of the game, delivering added content and widespread availability across modern platforms. Persona 4 Revival must encompass all of this content, including the extended epilogue, ski trip, garden activities, and Marie’s storyline. None of these elements should be segmented into separate DLC packs. Ensuring everything is included from the start guarantees a complete and satisfying experience for all players.

Full Voice Acting for Social Links

A significant enhancement in Persona 3 Reload was the full voice acting for all social links, dramatically increasing character depth and overall immersion. Persona 4 Revival needs to implement this feature as well, providing complete voiceovers for every social link. While some original voice actors may not return, new talent can bring a refreshing perspective and enrich the narrative with fresh recordings. This will provide a better game.

Restore Atmospheric Effects Like Fog and Lighting

The original PS2 version of Persona 4 beautifully utilized detailed fog and lighting effects to create a distinctive, moody atmosphere. These atmospheric elements were somewhat simplified in Persona 4 Golden. For Persona 4 Revival, modern technology should be leveraged to not only restore but also enhance these effects. These visual cues are integral to the game’s unique identity and are key to setting it apart from other titles in the Persona series.

Revamp the Dungeon Design

Although Persona 4 boasts a compelling narrative and memorable characters, its dungeon design can feel repetitive due to the grid-like corridors. Atlus should significantly revamp these dungeons, drawing inspiration from Persona 5’s intricate Palace designs. Incorporating more engaging puzzles, opportunities for exploration, and optional rewards would make dungeon crawling feel fresh and rewarding, eliminating the sense of monotony and encouraging players to explore every corner.

Add New Special Attacks

Persona 3 Reload introduced Theurgy attacks, while Persona 5 Royal featured Showtime moves. Persona 4 Revival should build upon the follow-up attacks already present in Golden and introduce unique, powerful ultimate attacks for all party member combinations. This addition would add strategic depth and visually stunning moments to combat. Battles will become more dynamic and enjoyable as a result, offering players new ways to engage with the combat system.

Simplify True Ending Requirements

Unlocking the true ending in Persona 4 Golden is infamously complicated. Players need to solve the murder mystery independently, answer questions in a precise sequence, and maximize specific social links. Often, players unintentionally miss critical steps, resulting in a bad ending. To reduce frustration and encourage more players to experience the complete story, Persona 4 Revival should streamline and ease these requirements, making the true ending more accessible.

Reintroduce Yosuke’s Removed Romance Option

Persona 4 has faced criticism for its lack of LGBTQ+ romance options, particularly given its exploration of other social issues. An intriguing detail is that a romance path with Yosuke was initially planned but later removed. Including this option in Persona 4 Revival would add complexity to Yosuke’s character. By portraying his homophobia as internal conflict rather than outright prejudice, a romantic social link could offer a compelling and meaningful storyline, allowing for significant character growth and exploration of important themes.

Update Outdated Scenes

Some scenes from the original Persona 4 can feel outdated or even insensitive by contemporary standards, similar to the infamous beach scene in Persona 3. Persona 4 Revival should revise these moments to align better with modern values and social awareness. This update would make the game more inclusive while preserving the essence of its core themes, ensuring that the game resonates positively with a wider audience.

By prioritizing these improvements, Atlus can create a Persona 4 Revival that truly honors the original while also being more relevant, comprehensive, and appealing to modern audiences. The remake should not only preserve the beloved story and characters but also enhance the gameplay, visuals, and social elements, ensuring a memorable and impactful experience for both longtime fans and new players alike.
